It’s about strength…  No matter where you are in the world, you need to know your hydraulic door system can tolerate the elements. Hydroswing doors can withstand up to 200 MPH wind loading. We also shot blast prior to painting. This ensures the perfect base for the application of Carboline Carboguard 890, a highly chemical-resistant epoxy mastic coating that adds 50% greater corrosion resistance than any other hydraulic door offered in this category. Shot blasting allows an added layer of inspection of the steel for rare imperfections which remain unseen in non-shot blasted door systems.

 It’s about safety… The Hydroswing® is operated by two dual-acting hydraulic rams powered by a single or three-phase motor and pump, and all of our electrical controls are UL Certified. This in itself provides an extra layer of safety because the Hydrowswing® is impossible to operate without access to the control unit, making it far more secure than other types of doors.

Hydroswing Selected as the Provider of Hydraulic Doors for up to 200 Hangars at the San Diego Metropolitan Air Park (Brown Field)

Big News!  Hydroswing® North America, Inc., the world leader in single panel hydraulic door systems, is pleased to announce the company has been selected as the sole source of hangar doors for one of the most important aviation developments in the United States.

In 2013, the wheels went in motion when the San Diego City Council approved a redevelopment of Brown Field Municipal Airport in Otay Mesa, involving more than $1 billion in planned improvements over the next 20 years. Metropolitan Airpark, a four-phase commercial development, will cover 331 acres of the city-owned, 880-acre facility near the U.S.-Mexico border. This development is poised to become a major commercial hub for strategic business partnerships between the U.S. and Mexico.

Over the next five years, the San Diego Metropolitan Air Park (Brown Field) will see the development of up to 200 hangars and mixed use industrial structures. Use of the Hydroswing® brand at this magnitude will be a milestone, with hangar doors ranging from Boeing BBJ (737) sizes to general aviation T hangars. These aviation-related installations along side the industrial Hydroswing® door systems will showcase Hydroswing’s emerging product range aimed at the industrial and commercial sectors.

 

Developer, Richard Sax, is no stranger to the large aviation door market and cites Hydroswing’s overwhelming appeal and efficiency, plus the much lower in-life servicing costs, as reasons for this significant selection. Bi-Fold Declared Dangerous - The Only Replacement Part for a Bi-fold is a Hydroswing

The bi-fold door is making headlines across Europe… and as usual, it’s bad news. Following a double fatality, the Express Hi Fold Door and Schweiss Hi Folding Doors UK Limited are declared HAZARDOUS by the Health and Safety Executive in Britain!

 

 The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently sent a country-wide letter “to all known users of powered overhead, bi-folding sectional doors manufactured, supplied or installed by Express Hi Fold Doors Limited or Schweiss Folding Doors UK Limited” stating these doors “currently do not have an anti-drop mechanism or other device to prevent the free fall of the door in the event of a drive of suspension failure.”  (An anti-drop mechanism is required by the European Safety Directive and European Standards.)

 

 There is no doubt the BI-FOLD IS A DANGEROUS DOOR! The HSE continues that “Without an anti-drop mechanism or other device, any failure of the drive or suspension system will result in the door free falling. This is clearly very hazardous…”  Further, the HSE recommends “As there is NO anti-drop mechanism or device available, we are writing to all known users to encourage you to TAKE THE DOOR OUT OF SERVICE….. UNTIL IT CAN BE REPLACED.”  The HSE will be enforcing action against those who do not take steps to replace the door.

Custom Cladding – The Glass Hydroswing

Enter the “glass Hydroswing®,” one of our most famous doors located at the McClellan–Palomar Airport in Carlsbad, California.


This masterpiece was designed and manufactured to replace a fabric door on one of the airport’s private hangars. Constructed with several tons of laminated glass, this magnificent door was built to showcase the aircraft displayed behind this 100% glass covered 63 ft. x 18 ft. single panel hydraulic door. Visually breathtaking, this glass door is just the tip of the iceberg as to what Hydroswing can do. This unique door is pre hung in its own S257 steel frame is built to ISO 9001 standards and American Welding Society D1.1 certified. The steel is shot blasted and primed in Carboline Primer 890 which is a highly chemical resistant epoxy mastic coating that is abrasion resistant. From the beginning, our standards have been the highest in the industry.  All Hydroswing® doors are fabricated in ISO 9001 facilities that adhere to the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 code requirements for welding of structural steel. Unlike other manufacturers, we understand the importance of working within specific codes and with vendors who boast an ISO certification. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the largest developer in the world of voluntary International Standards.  An independent and non-governmental membership organization at work in 165 countries, ISO began in London in 1946 with a goal to “facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards.” Today, ISO has published over 19,500 International Standards covering almost all of manufacturing and technology.

 

 ISO 9001 is part of the ISO 9000 “family of quality management systems standards” designed to help manufacturers meet statutory and regulatory requirements related to a product.  A third party certification provides an “independent confirmation” that companies meet the requirements of ISO 9001. So what does the mean for Hydroswing® customers? It means we are confident in our selected vendors and we pass that quality to our end users.  The ISO 9001 facilities we work with have Quality Management Systems (QMS) in place and are stringently audited for welding and quality assurance. The hydraulic components are sourced centrally in the United States for further continuous quality and supply chain integrity.

 

At Hydroswing®, fabrication quality is just one area we set ourselves apart from others. Our welding is always to AWS D1.1 code which covers the requirements for “any type of welded structure made from the commonly used carbon and low-alloy constructional steels.”  Another example of our quality systems is our shot blasting pre-paint. Hydraulics are always evolving. Hydroswing® is always evolving. Back in the day, operators turned a crank to raise and lower cable lift dump trucks.  Enter hydraulics and the dynamics of the dump truck are transformed.  A horizontal hydraulic ram and lever simplified and changed an entire industry. The History of Hydraulics – Still Going Strong

The word “hydraulic” comes from the Greek ‘hydra’ which refers to water and ‘aulos’ which means pipes.  Science historians believe that hydraulics (in an extremely basic form) originated in the Greek civilization two millennia ago.  The mathematician, Archimedes, reasoned that “a floating or immersed body must be acted upon an upward force equal to weight of the liquid that it displaces.”

As time passed, science improved, technology was beginning to take shape and ways to effectively use hydraulic energy were being discovered.  It all began with how water physically behaved at rest or in motion, and evolved from how to generate power with water at the source, to how to generate power at different points of use. Soon, the concept of transmitting power by putting fluids under pressure changed the face of engineering.  

In the late 17th century, the study of using oil in hydraulics started to get some legs. French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, created at law in fluid mechanics stating “that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the pressure variations (initial differences) remain the same.” This became known as Pascal’s Law and created the fundamentals for the science of hydraulics.

 

Enter English inventor Joseph Bramah. Based on Pascal’s Law, Bramah invented the hydraulic press. His understanding of the relationship between force, pressure and area forever changed engineering and industry.  Bramah demonstrated that pressure throughout a closed system is constant and he was granted a patent for his product in 1795. By the time Britain’s industrial revolution hit in 1850, hydraulics were being used in a multitude of industries.  The twentieth century saw fluid power through hydraulic replacing electrical systems and the rest, as they say, is history.  


Greenham Common used hydraulic doors to seal in safety and seal out nuclear blast. Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force in WW II and most famously by the US Air Force as a major Cold War Nuclear Strike Base. From late 1967, Greenham Common was used for NATO operations in deterrence of the Eastern Block countries. The missile bunkers seen here were designed with their hydraulic doors to withstand the local airbursting of a point strike on the West’s front line deterrent from the East, showing the unique ability of the Hydraulic door system to carry strength and integrity to such a level… and they are still in existence today for all to see as part of the Cold War history.
