Are Bi-fold Doors Dangerous? You be the Judge.

The bi-fold door is once again in the news… and once again, it’s not good. Over the years, this kind of door has been linked to countless accidents and multiple deaths. On April 1, 2014 it happened again. According to CBS news in Minnesota, “A northern Minnesota man died Tuesday morning, officials say, after his jacket got caught in a large door at his work. It happened at Bagley Hardwood Products at around 8:40 a.m. The 41-year-old Fosston, Minn., man was standing next to a 40-by-20 foot bi-fold door as it opened. He got caught in some cables and pulled up to his death, the Bagley Police Department said.” Read the full article here.

 

In 2002, according to the US Department of Labor, “one of five lifting, hoisting cables came unfastened at one end of a bi-fold door, apparently because the saddle clamps had been installed improperly. One cable, immediately adjacent to the loosened cable was missing entirely, and the door began moving downward on the right side. The tilting caused the door roller to come out of its track. The lower portion of the door then struck Employee #1. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.”

 

The photos below were taken from a recent bi-fold breakdown at Apollo Aviation, LTD at the Brighton Airport (Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, United Kingdom). The existing doors were only three years old and one had fallen down completely as a result of wire cable failure, the other was an accident waiting to happen. Having narrowly missed the operator on site, Apollo wanted to quickly dispose of a potentially dangerous situation and start new with a stronger, simpler, safer hydraulic door solution.

Biomass and Renewable Energy – A Market on the Move

Biomass energy is a hot topic. With a consumption increase of over 60% from 2002 to 2013, it’s easy to see why this sector is growing at such a rapid rate. Biomass is defined as “biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. Both plant and animal.” Even though wood is considered to be the most prolific source of biomass energy, agriculture is currently producing huge amounts of biomass residue that can be converted to energy.  In 2013, half of all the renewable energy consumed worldwide came from biomass, with the U.S. number coming in at 5%.  (That 5% is enough power to accommodate close to a half a million homes.) The U.K. and Europe are already on the fast track to successful biomass energy platforms, and it’s catching on across the globe. According to recent reports, the use of biomass for energy could change the face of agriculture and provide farmers in the U.S. alone up to $20 billion in new income.   

 

The goal is to convert crop residue, manure and other agricultural byproducts into renewable energy sources. As farmers are learning how to capture and store these resources, they are gaining new revenue streams by producing energy while reducing disposal costs. According to Ag Energy Solutions, farmers can profit from “manure, corn stalks, woody-brush, or even weeds and grasses. By utilizing more of the biological material that grows on the farm, farmers can gain more value from each acre. And because biomass is renewable, and it’s easy to replace harvested trees or crops; these energy-rich waste materials are sustainable indefinitely.”

 

In addition to large, industrial facilities, farmers are beginning to construct buildings (within the guidelines and regulations of their rural area) specifically designed to house biomass. The Bifold Hangar Door… Inferior by design

Technology has moved on from wires, cables, pulleys and straps. The world is becoming simpler and safer. Hydraulic doors will soon be the only logical choice for not only aviation, but for agriculture, architecture and mining sectors as well. From a safety perspective, by its very nature, the bifold door is outdated and potentially dangerous.  We recently completed an installation in the U.K. that demonstrates exactly why bifolds are an endangered species.  

 

We were called us about replacing two doors at the Brighton Airport (Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, United Kingdom). The existing bifold doors were only three years old and one (at the Real Flying Company) had fallen down completely as a result of wire cable failure, the other (at Advance Helicopters) was an accident waiting to happen. Having narrowly missed the operator on site, the owner wanted to quickly dispose of a potentially dangerous situation and start new with a stronger, simpler, safer hydraulic Hydroswing® door solution. The operationally unsound bifolds were products of Express Hi Fold Ltd. (a known knock off of an American product by a similar name) and rely on wire cables connected to a chain driven winding axle drum.  With such a high number of moving parts, the risk of failure increases exponentially.

Commercial Hydraulic Doors Plus Industrial Hydraulic Doors Equal Solutions by Hydroswing

In December of 2013, the oil platform manufacturer, Heerema, needed something unique – a 115’ (35m) x 20’ (6m) hydraulic door for their Hartlepool facility in the north of England. “They knew Hydroswing® had the technology to design something of this magnitude, so naturally we got the call,” comments Alan Clark, International Sales Director for Hydroswing®. “We are very excited to have built this.  Before the option of this door, openings were restricted. Structures with needs this wide had to rely on steel rolling doors or sectional applications. The Future of Mining Machinery is Looking Bright and Hydroswing Will Be There

Heavy machinery is synonymous with mining. It’s used in every aspect of the sector from exploration and development of sites to break down and removal of rocks to processing and reclamation. The total number of mines in world is upwards of 25,000 producing industrial minerals and almost 100,000 quarries that produce aggregates used in the construction sector. The study goes on “to highlight the Asia Pacific region and both Central and South America as the fastest growing markets for mining equipment.”  According to an article recently published on the Pit & Quarry website: “The study also forecasts strong gains in South America, as mining companies look to develop the region’s sizable deposits of bauxite, copper and iron ore. The dissipation of copper oversupply issues that existed in 2012 and 2013 will allow prices to recover and boost associated mining equipment demand in areas rich in copper, such as Chile and Peru. The Africa/Mideast region will post the next fastest advances, followed by Eastern and Western Europe and North America.”

 

Steel and aluminum production has also seen growth so the demand for metals mining equipment is keeping pace. Studies show this sector of mining will rise at the fastest pace over the next three years. In addition, construction spending is increasing and global agriculture output is on the rise. Therefore, it will be important that mining equipment manufacturers and all the vendors that work within this sector keep step. Hydroswing® plans to march to the front of the line.
