Biomass and Renewable Energy – A Market on the Move

Biomass energy is a hot topic. With a consumption increase of over 60% from 2002 to 2013, it’s easy to see why this sector is growing at such a rapid rate. Biomass is defined as “biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. Both plant and animal.” Even though wood is considered to be the most prolific source of biomass energy, agriculture is currently producing huge amounts of biomass residue that can be converted to energy.  In 2013, half of all the renewable energy consumed worldwide came from biomass, with the U.S. number coming in at 5%.  (That 5% is enough power to accommodate close to a half a million homes.) The U.K. and Europe are already on the fast track to successful biomass energy platforms, and it’s catching on across the globe. According to recent reports, the use of biomass for energy could change the face of agriculture and provide farmers in the U.S. alone up to $20 billion in new income.   

 

The goal is to convert crop residue, manure and other agricultural byproducts into renewable energy sources. According to Ag Energy Solutions, farmers can profit from “manure, corn stalks, woody-brush, or even weeds and grasses. In December of 2013, the oil platform manufacturer, Heerema, needed something unique – a 115’ (35m) x 20’ (6m) hydraulic door for their Hartlepool facility in the north of England. “They knew Hydroswing® had the technology to design something of this magnitude, so naturally we got the call,” comments Alan Clark, International Sales Director for Hydroswing®. “We are very excited to have built this. We have always identified industrial and commercial usage as core sectors of our market and now that we have done this, we see the opportunity to change the way buildings deliver efficiency to their users.”  (The door was manufactured in Preston, England at an ISO9001 facility.)

 

 Before the option of this door, openings were restricted. Structures with needs this wide had to rely on steel rolling doors or sectional applications. The option of a single panel hydraulic door changed everything. The massive opening capacity, teamed with expanded vertical clearance and an almost air-tight seal, essentially creates a movable wall. In turn, the enhanced building efficiency (EBE™) reduces both costs across the board.

 

Hydroswing® was also called to task to provide a solution for Airbus in England. We were able to manufacture a 57’ x 28’ (18 meters  x 8.5 meters) door that immediately matched their needs and retro fit their existing Durr Paint Booth in only five days. Post frame construction has its deep roots in agriculture. This kind of building came to prominence in the 1930s. Poles (usually telephone poles which in turn lead to the name “pole barn”) were sunk into the ground and steel roofing and siding was put into place to complete the structure. This was a short list for foundational material and it simplified the barn construction process. The telephone poles were later replaced by chemically treated sawn posts, then metal plates were introduced that connected the trusses and roof spans began to increase. Later, laminated posts made the scene and all the buildings were able to go taller as well. Today, post frame construction is still extremely efficient and is used worldwide for an array of projects, and remains the leading choice for agricultural and storage buildings.
