Hydroswing Then and Now – Always Raising the Bar Higher

Hydraulics are always evolving. Hydroswing® is always evolving. Back in the day, operators turned a crank to raise and lower cable lift dump trucks.  Enter hydraulics and the dynamics of the dump truck are transformed.  A horizontal hydraulic ram and lever simplified and changed an entire industry. And so it is with the Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door.  It won’t be long before slider, roller and bifold doors go by the way of the cable lift dump truck. Door systems have been transformed by the power of hydraulics: simple and reliable solutions for any and every door problem.

Hydroswing® was born in agriculture. Farmers needed easy, reliable doors for sheds, barns and production facilities.  They didn’t want to worry about pulleys, straps and broken parts. The early Hydroswing® doors were medium (comparatively speaking) in size, yet always extremely efficient, and farmers believed and trusted the fluid power and simplicity of hydraulics. Hydroswing® was on the move.

1998 the first Hydroswing door.

The DNA of the modern day Hydroswing® was built in agriculture but quickly evolved to include all sectors. With over 7,000 sold to date in aviation, agriculture, industry and architectural market sectors, the future holds endless possibilities.  Technological advancements and cutting edge design have made Hydroswing® the industry leader.  Today’s Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door replaces almost all door systems with strength, efficiency, value, aesthetics, reduced maintenance and versatility.

Over the years, as budgets around the world became leaner and with higher sensitivity to re-use and maintenance, Hydroswing® found a way to produce the same high quality doors at a lower price. In all critical environments, less moving parts usually means greater ease of use, less cost of ownership, lower in life service costs, ease of local repair in the event of failure, simplicity of understanding and ease of replacement of old and unserviceable former doors.

The Hydroswing® single panel door system, like no other on the market paves the way to expand and grow in a market which is late to change and react.  By changing the way new and existing buildings function via implementation of the Hydroswing® it will lead to new efficiencies in building and wall designs.

Once produced only in the United States, Hydroswing® is now fully fabricated and engineered in ISO 9001 facilities worldwide. Evolution is a natural process, and Hydroswing is a natural selection for all your door needs from 10’ wide to 150’ wide and now up to 45’ tall.

The History of Hydraulics – Still Going Strong

The word “hydraulic” comes from the Greek ‘hydra’ which refers to water and ‘aulos’ which means pipes.  Science historians believe that hydraulics (in an extremely basic form) originated in the Greek civilization two millennia ago.  The mathematician, Archimedes, reasoned that “a floating or immersed body must be acted upon an upward force equal to weight of the liquid that it displaces.”

As time passed, science improved, technology was beginning to take shape and ways to effectively use hydraulic energy were being discovered.  It all began with how water physically behaved at rest or in motion, and evolved from how to generate power with water at the source, to how to generate power at different points of use. Soon, the concept of transmitting power by putting fluids under pressure changed the face of engineering.

In the late 17th century, the study of using oil in hydraulics started to get some legs. French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, created at law in fluid mechanics stating “that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the pressure variations (initial differences) remain the same.” This became known as Pascal’s Law and created the fundamentals for the science of hydraulics.

Enter English inventor Joseph Bramah. Based on Pascal’s Law, Bramah invented the hydraulic press. His understanding of the relationship between force, pressure and area forever changed engineering and industry.  Bramah demonstrated that pressure throughout a closed system is constant and he was granted a patent for his product in 1795. By the time Britain’s industrial revolution hit in 1850, hydraulics were being used in a multitude of industries.  The twentieth century saw fluid power through hydraulic replacing electrical systems and the rest, as they say, is history.

Greenham Common used hydraulic doors to seal in safety and seal out nuclear blast. Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force in WW II and most famously by the US Air Force as a major Cold War Nuclear Strike Base. From late 1967, Greenham Common was used for NATO operations in deterrence of the Eastern Block countries. The missile bunkers seen here were designed with their hydraulic doors to withstand the local airbursting of a point strike on the West’s front line deterrent from the East, showing the unique ability of the Hydraulic door system to carry strength and integrity to such a level… and they are still in existence today for all to see as part of the Cold War history.

Today, Hydroswing® is proud to be the pioneer in hydraulic doors. Our superior technology has allowed us to engineer single panel hydraulic doors that replace doors with mechanical and electrical drives.  We have taken hydraulic door systems to the next level and are changing the world one door at time. Don’t you want to be a part of our door revolution?

The Strength of a Hydroswing Hydraulic Door

Hurricane season is here. Hydroswing’s phone lines are lighting up as customers from severe weather zones begin to prepare. Customer after customer tells the tale of lesser doors on their own hangars and structures that turn to rubble, while neighbors with a Hydroswing® Door stood steady and strong. We’ve heard reports of bits and pieces of bifold doors on the ground at the end of the storm, while the Hydroswing® on the property remained virtually unaffected.

According to a report on risks of hurricane damage by Johns Hopkins University, “In a hurricane, gusts of wind can be expected to be 25% to 50% higher than the sustained wind velocity. Thus, a hurricane with sustained winds of 150 mph may produce gusts exceeding 200 mph. The effect of a storm's wind is best evaluated in terms of the pressure it exerts. Pressure varies with the square of the velocity, meaning that pressures increases very rapidly with increasing wind velocity. For example, a 100 mph wind exerts a pressure of about 40 pounds per square foot on a flat surface, while a 190 mph wind would exert a force of 122 pounds per square foot. As an example, in a 100 mph wind, a 4x8 sheet of plywood would be thrown by up to 1100 pounds of force.”

Building owners need to be ready, and with a Hydroswing® you’ve got a better chance to protect your investments. Today, with budgets tight, it’s more important than ever to take every precaution to make your building structurally sound. Statistics prove approximately 80% of hurricane wind damage initiates with wind entry through the largest opening of a structure. This means that securing that opening greatly increases the chances of the survival of that structure – and the protection of its contents. According to the same study, “Garage door failure was a significant cause of damage during past hurricanes. The most common failure was deflection of the garage door from wind pressure until the tracks rotated and the door rollers separated from the tracks. Loss of doors resulted in envelope breach and a sudden increase in internal pressure.” This same theory will hold true for your hangar or warehouse door that is on rollers. With no rollers to consider, and single panel construction, the Hydroswing® is a must in hard weather and wind locations.

After witnessing Hydroswing superiority (up to 200 MPH wind loading) for themselves, many weather-wary Gulf Coast residents are trading up to Hydroswing as well. If you’re an existing Hydroswing customer, you can rest easy knowing that when this severe weather season is over, you and your investments will remain safe and protected behind the sturdiest, most secure door system on the market... and if you’re not... make the move to replace now, or you may regret it later.

The “Sustainable” Single Panel Hydraulic Door System

Sustainable means “pertaining to a system that maintains its own viability by using techniques that allow for continual reuse.” By replacing bifold or roller shutter doors with a Hydroswing® single panel agricultural door on your equipment and/or process buildings, you will probably never have to replace the door again. Hydroswing® is a sustainable solution to all your door needs.

The simplicity of a single panel hydraulic door compared to bifold and roller shutter doors changes face of agricultural buildings. With a Hydroswing®, (complete in its own frame, pre hung, ready to go “pillar to pillar” and right to the header), the wider you go, the better value it becomes. Safe and easy-to-use, the Hydroswing® provides almost zero in life service costs and therefore a guaranteed return on your investment.

When farmers, ranchers and biomass producers consider the potential for door replacement in their older buildings, more and more they are turning to the single panel hydraulic door solution. With internal personnel doors, wind loadings to cope with forces of 200 MPH and strength to keep valuable machinery locked in and secure, the Hydroswing® offers the most attractive and cost effective source in the marketplace today. (Financing made easier than ever through our new equipment leasing program. ) For tractor security, plant and machinery security, Hydroswing® is the only choice for farm, biomass fuel, industrial and grain storage building doors.

The difference is clear to see in the photo above, where one of three buildings has had two roller shutter doors replaced by one efficient, single panel hydraulic door. This addition adds door size, value, and in some instances, may allow you to use old buildings in ways previously not thought possible without constructing a new building. Concentrating on what you do with your building or shed is more important to your bottom line than replacing a door every two or three years.

The Hydroswing® will not pop out of its rails, rust away, flap in the wind, or allow pigeons or other birds in via the roller. With 70% less moving parts than a bifold, the Hydroswing® seals all the way round its own frame, and if required for food regulations, can be made 100% rodent proof.

Add value, size and efficiency by replacing your warn out or dangerous bifold or roller shutter doors to your biomass fuel store, grain store or agricultural buildings with a Hydroswing®. Sustain your door for years to come. Buy or lease a Hydroswing today.

Looking to Replace your Hangar Door?

Hydroswing® takes pride in meeting the needs of aircraft owners and facilities worldwide. Whether it’s new build hangars and the retrofit market, or replacing yesteryear’s aging number of unserviceable hangar doors, Hydroswing® brings the best to the marketplace.

The main issues facing airports and airfield owners, operators and tenants are the cost of hangar door replacement, return on investment, increase in door size, overall efficiency and the time it takes to install. The question Hydroswing® hears most is “do I have to replace my building or over build its door end structure?” The answer is NO. In most instances, you don’t have to scrap your building, just because your old door system is beyond economic service.

The Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door easily replaces bifold, bottom rolling, concertina, stacking, barn, fabric, sectional/sliding and large roller shutter doors, in aviation facilities, private hangars, helicopter hangars and MRO facilities around the globe. There is minimal load and reaction levels to existing structures because Hydrowswing® is pre hung on in its own frame. This allows for a simple removal of old door and in many cases, no additional structural work. Our customers quickly see the benefits of “going big,” increasing the height to the eaves, and increasing the size of the hangar to the maximum of the building frame width or section.

If you’re in aviation, you’ve seen bad doors. Broken (and dangerous) bi-folds, torn fabric sliders, self-built disasters, and inefficient rollers and stackers can cost more than they’re worth to repair. Chains, pulleys, straps and too many parts can invariably lead to a break down and possibly an accident where someone may be injured or even killed. So isn’t it time for a change?

Cost effective, safe, and accommodating in sizes up to 150’(45.0 m) wide  X 40’(12.0 m) high, our hydraulic door is being retrofitted in commercial aviation facilities, private airplane and helicopter hangars alike. Simplicity, strength, ease of use and reduction in moving parts, plus use of cladding (which makes the door match the thermal characteristics of the building) are among the top reasons customers are making the switch to Hydroswing®. The sophistication of single panel hydraulic doors is now part of everyday door use across the aviation sector.

Stepping into the Future of Agriculture

A couple of centuries ago, 90% of the population in the United States lived on farms and produced food. Today, farmers who produce cereals, fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy, only make up 2% of the population and still provide to the masses. To keep up with this ever growing demand, agriculture has turned to modern machinery and technology. In 1940, the data shows that one farmer could feed 19 people. By 2010, that number had increased to 155 people. Changes in equipment, biotech breakthroughs for crop production, and modified barns and storage facilities have allowed for vast improvements throughout the industry.

The bottom line: Farms are growing in size because of increased efficiency, and hydraulic doors are playing a huge role. Hydroswing® is playing a huge role. It’s important for all farmers to keep their valuable machinery locked in and secure, and the Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door is the best choice. The Hydroswing® is operated by two dual-acting hydraulic rams powered by a single or three-phase motor and pump. This in itself provides an extra layer of safety because the Hydrowswing® is impossible to operate without access to the control unit, making it far more secure than other types of doors. And, with almost 100% seal-ability, our door can be easily retrofitted to existing buildings or fitted to new builds for the ultimate in efficiency for all agricultural building or shop doors.

What’s on your farm? Bi-folds? Roller doors? Sliders? Unlike those, the Hydroswing® will not pop out of its rails, rust away, flap in the wind, or allow birds to fly in via the gaps around the door slabs. The Hydroswing® seals all the way around its own frame and if required for food regulations, can be made 100% varmint/bird proof. With Hydroswing, there is freedom to “open end” or “open side” any building, providing unrestricted loading and maneuvering for composting, silage, grain storage, feed/transfer sheds/buildings and farm shops.  The overhead clearance also allows for multiple load discharge saving valuable supplier transport time between loads… all going straight to your bottom line and ROI on your investment in the Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door system.

If you have special coverings/sheeting and sealing requirements, the simplicity and strength of a Hydroswing® allow you to have the door covered in the same as the walls maintaining insulation levels for better efficiency and cost effectiveness over cold winters.

Step into the future of efficiency with Hydroswing®. Our doors can be fitted to post and frame , pole barns, stick, steel (PEB), tensile, Quonset, brick and block structures with little or no alteration to an existing building for retro fit or total simplicity when designing your new building to receive the totally “pre hung” Hydroswing®.

It's Time for a Hydraulic Door

Retrofit is defined as a “modification to equipment that is already in service using parts developed or made after the time of the original manufacturer.” When it comes to doors (or walls), it’s easy to retrofit almost any opening with a Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door. Whether you’re in aviation or agriculture, you’ve seen bad doors.

The original Hydroswing® hydraulic door is the ideal replacement for any kind of door on any kind of structure. Because our pre hung design, we can retrofit both large small building doors with little or no impact to the existing building. These minimal load and reaction levels to existing structures allow a simple removal of old door and, in most instances, no additional structural work. Customers are seeing the benefits of “going big” and increasing height and width to maximum clearance.

Cost effective, safe, and accommodating in sizes up to 150’(45.0 m) wide  X 40’(12.0 m) high, our hydraulic door is being retrofitted in everything from commercial aviation facilities and private airplane and helicopter hangars to barns, agricultural centers, sheds and machine shops. The Hydroswing® is operated by two dual-acting hydraulic rams powered by a single or three-phase motor and pump. This in itself provides an extra layer of safety because the Hydrowswing® is impossible to operate without access to the control unit, making it far more secure than other types of doors. Simplicity, strength, ease of use and reduction in moving parts, plus use of cladding (which makes the door match the thermal characteristics of the building) are among the top reasons customers are making the switch to Hydroswing®. The sophistication of single panel hydraulic doors is now part of everyday door use for facilities large and small across the U.S. and around the world.

Replacing old facility doors with the low maintenance seal-ability and strength of a Hydroswing® is a smart, safe move. With almost zero in life service costs (creating a fast and high return on investment) the Hydroswing® is ready to go “pillar to pillar” and right to the header. The wider you go with a Hydroswing®, the better value it becomes. Isn’t it time to step into the future and retrofit your outdated door?

Biomass and Renewable Energy – A Market on the Move

Biomass energy is a hot topic. With a consumption increase of over 60% from 2002 to 2013, it’s easy to see why this sector is growing at such a rapid rate. Biomass is defined as “biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. Both plant and animal.” Even though wood is considered to be the most prolific source of biomass energy, agriculture is currently producing huge amounts of biomass residue that can be converted to energy.  In 2013, half of all the renewable energy consumed worldwide came from biomass, with the U.S. number coming in at 5%.  (That 5% is enough power to accommodate close to a half a million homes.) The U.K. and Europe are already on the fast track to successful biomass energy platforms, and it’s catching on across the globe. According to recent reports, the use of biomass for energy could change the face of agriculture and provide farmers in the U.S. alone up to $20 billion in new income.

The goal is to convert crop residue, manure and other agricultural byproducts into renewable energy sources. As farmers are learning how to capture and store these resources, they are gaining new revenue streams by producing energy while reducing disposal costs. According to Ag Energy Solutions, farmers can profit from “manure, corn stalks, woody-brush, or even weeds and grasses. By utilizing more of the biological material that grows on the farm, farmers can gain more value from each acre. And because biomass is renewable, and it’s easy to replace harvested trees or crops; these energy-rich waste materials are sustainable indefinitely.”

In addition to large, industrial facilities, farmers are beginning to construct buildings (within the guidelines and regulations of their rural area) specifically designed to house biomass. These multifunctional structures are made to store and protect the contents from moisture while creating space to burn and/or transport the material to biomass processing plants.  And Hydroswing® is there too. Our single panel hydraulic doors offer almost complete seal-ability, and with the wide variety of size options, they are the right door at the right time in the right sector.

A current article in Biomass Magazine stated the “USDA Farm Service Agency recently announced the expansion of its Farm Storage and Facility Loan program, which provides low-interest financing to producers. With regard to bioenergy, the loan program can provide low-interest funds to build or upgrade permanent facilities to store eligible commodities, including renewable biomass.”

With the ability to retro fit to existing buildings or apply to new build, the Hydroswing® adds size, ease of use and value to the processes in the biomass and renewable sector and can easily withstand the rigors of waste and recycling.  Pre hung in its own frame, the Hydroswing® can deliver zero load and reaction to the building is required to be fitted to a tensile or none structural building. Whether high cycling rates or long periods for seasonal storage and holding buildings, the Hydroswing® hydraulic door provides a greater array of working and process efficiencies than traditional sectional, overhead or roller doors with industry leading ROI.

The way we capture and use energy is changing.  The E.U. is already dedicated to the cause and has a goal of 20% of their energy being created by renewables by 2020. The U.S. is catching up and hopes to have 25% dedicated to the same faction by 2015. Hydroswing® remains on the cutting edge of all sectors of industry by providing a product that will easily adapt and play a role in existing facilities and new facilities that are being built to promote this commitment to new energy.

Commercial Hydraulic Doors Plus Industrial Hydraulic Doors Equal Solutions by Hydroswing

Until now, a wall was a wall… enter Europe’s largest single panel hydraulic door. This gigantic manufacturing masterpiece is creating a revolution in terms of construction possibilities. Now walls up to 150’ (45m) wide and 40’ (12m) tall can be converted into useful and cost effective hydraulic doors. With almost 100% seal-ability, this conversion will forever change the face of commercial and industrial structures around the world. Hydroswing® has broken the size barrier and is charging into the large commercial door and industrial door market.

In December of 2013, the oil platform manufacturer, Heerema, needed something unique – a 115’ (35m) x 20’ (6m) hydraulic door for their Hartlepool facility in the north of England. “They knew Hydroswing® had the technology to design something of this magnitude, so naturally we got the call,” comments Alan Clark, International Sales Director for Hydroswing®. “We are very excited to have built this. We have always identified industrial and commercial usage as core sectors of our market and now that we have done this, we see the opportunity to change the way buildings deliver efficiency to their users.”  (The door was manufactured in Preston, England at an ISO9001 facility.)

Before the option of this door, openings were restricted. Structures with needs this wide had to rely on steel rolling doors or sectional applications. The option of a single panel hydraulic door changed everything. The massive opening capacity, teamed with expanded vertical clearance and an almost air-tight seal, essentially creates a movable wall. In turn, the enhanced building efficiency (EBE™) reduces both costs across the board.

Hydroswing® was also called to task to provide a solution for Airbus in England. They were looking for a specific product for the Main Wing paint booth for their A380 Super Jumbo and wanted something that would be seated well enough to the floor that it would have the efficiency of a wall but the capabilities of door. We were able to manufacture a 57’ x 28’ (18 meters  x 8.5 meters) door that immediately matched their needs and retro fit their existing Durr Paint Booth in only five days. The seal-abilty of the door was so tight their reduction in electricity on extraction fan speed alone generated a return on investment (ROI) in six months.

Hydroswing® is overcoming space and size hurdles in the commercial and industrial sectors at a rapid pace. New projects in the works include a “door within a door” allowing for a smaller single panel installation within the confines of a 150’ (45m) main door allowing a wide array of multi-use possibilities.

Hydroswing® is single handedly changing the way people use doors in commercial and industrial settings. Our ability to design and create solutions for large industrial doors and large commercial doors will leave a lasting impact on productivity, efficiency and cost effectiveness.
