Hydroswing – The Basics

Hydraulics are the foundation of the future. The simplicity of liquid fluid power moving heavy objects is a solution that fits into all sectors of building and manufacturing. Hydroswing is the original and still the best hydraulic door on the market and we have a profound understanding of what it takes to create an extraordinary product.

The anatomy of a Hydroswing Door

A fundamental feature of any hydraulic system is the ability to apply force or torque multiplication in an easy way, independent of the distance between the input and output, without the need for mechanical gears or levers. This concept, used in large machinery worldwide for decades, is at the core of the Hydroswing hydraulic door. The Hydroswing® is operated by two dual-acting hydraulic rams powered by a single or three-phase motor and pump, and all of our electrical controls are UL Certified. This in itself provides an extra layer of safety because the Hydrowswing® is impossible to operate without access to the control unit, making it far more secure than other types of doors.)

Simple, powerful and secure

Our single panel doors are fabricated and welded to ISO 9001 and American Welding Society D1.1 standards and each is stringently audited for strength and quality assurance. The Hydroswing is always pre hung in its own frame of tube steel. Unlike inferior products on the market, the Hydroswing is an industry leader in post fabrication shot blasting. We use a Carboline Carboguard 890 Epoxy paint finish with a certificate of conformance being supplied with each door to ensure the integrity of this work.

Simplicity, strength, ease of use and reduction in moving parts, plus use of cladding (which makes the door match the thermal characteristics of the building) are among the top reasons customers are making the switch to Hydroswing®. The sophistication of single panel hydraulic doors is now part of everyday door use for facilities large and small across the U.S. and around the world.

The Hydroswing finds itself in all kinds of places!

Cost effective, safe, and accommodating in sizes up to 150’(45.0 m) wide  X 40’(12.0 m) high, our hydraulic door is being retrofitted in everything from commercial aviation facilities and private airplane and helicopter hangars to barns, agricultural centers, sheds and machine shops.

Remember, if it doesn’t come from Hydroswing,

it’s not a Hydroswing.

An Obsolete Hangar Door Doesn’t Mean an Obsolete Hangar

In many instances the useful service life of a hangar is defined by the economic viability of replacing a malfunctioning or out-of-date bifold or roller door. Today in aviation, the value proposition is extremely important when balancing the choice of a new build or the retrofit of an older structure. The frame of the hangar may live for many years, so there’s no reason the hangar door can’t produce the same structural stability and longevity. The addition of a new Hydroswing hydraulic door transforms your hangar and extends the life of your building.

Failed bifold is being cut up getting ready for a new Hydroswing door

Hydroswing is constantly bringing new life to perfectly good but aged, airfield and privately owned hangars. By removing the old and obsolete rolling sectionals or a potentially dangerous bifold door and replacing it with the simple, pre hung single panel Hydroswing® hangar door, the hangar is revitalized at a fraction of the cost of a new build. With no impact to the existing building structure, easy installation (usually only one day), very low maintenance costs, increased overhead space and  70% fewer moving parts than most aircraft hangar doors, Hydroswing is quickly becoming the number one replacement door in the world.

Delivered hung in its own frame the Hydroswing® hydraulic door is easy to retro fit or install in a new build.

Dust is a constant enemy to systems in aviation and industry. Old and outdated doors that have issues with sealing correctly causing a negative impact on the hangar as whole. Retrofitting an existing structure with the modern, sophisticated and almost 100% sealable Hydroswing® dramatically reduces dust content, allowing aircraft owners, MRO and service center operations to update ailing hangars. The Hydroswing creates a well-sealed and protected aircraft space, especially in desert or high wind borne debris environments.

You won’t lose head room either, the Hydroswing door is extremely space efficient!

Hangars are large spaces to heat or cool and temperature loss via existing damaged or aged bifold sections are inefficiencies that can be addressed simply by replacing the door. In addition, Hydroswing can easily clad or treat the new hydraulic door with exactly the same thermal properties as the rest of your building, especially important when calculating cost of ownership and in life ownership service costs of the overall structure.

Even when the building is replaced, the Hydroswing® can be unbolted and refitted to a new build easily with minimal effort. The Hydroswing® is truly, “restoration door hardware” for existing hangars. With a Hydroswing, your hangar is never obsolete. Don’t be defined by your old door, fit a Hydroswing® single panel hangar door to your facility today. Strong, secure, powerful, with minimal in life service costs and “touch of a button” ease of opening, the Hydroswing makes any hangar modern. When looking at the costs associated with hangar ownership, “re dooring” your existing hangar with a state-of-the-art hydraulic door may be the best option. Hydroswing is the original and still best hydraulic hangar door on the market.

ISO 9001/ AWS D1.1 – Because Quality Matters

Hydroswing® is synonymous with quality. From the beginning, our standards have been the highest in the industry.  All Hydroswing® doors are fabricated in ISO 9001 facilities that adhere to the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 code requirements for welding of structural steel. Unlike other manufacturers, we understand the importance of working within specific codes and with vendors who boast an ISO certification. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the largest developer in the world of voluntary International Standards.  An independent and non-governmental membership organization at work in 165 countries, ISO began in London in 1946 with a goal to “facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards.” Today, ISO has published over 19,500 International Standards covering almost all of manufacturing and technology.

ISO 9001 is part of the ISO 9000 “family of quality management systems standards” designed to help manufacturers meet statutory and regulatory requirements related to a product.  A third party certification provides an “independent confirmation” that companies meet the requirements of ISO 9001. So what does the mean for Hydroswing® customers? It means we are confident in our selected vendors and we pass that quality to our end users.  The ISO 9001 facilities we work with have Quality Management Systems (QMS) in place and are stringently audited for welding and quality assurance. The hydraulic components are sourced centrally in the United States for further continuous quality and supply chain integrity.

At Hydroswing®, fabrication quality is just one area we set ourselves apart from others. Our welding is always to AWS D1.1 code which covers the requirements for “any type of welded structure made from the commonly used carbon and low-alloy constructional steels.”  Another example of our quality systems is our shot blasting pre-paint. This ensures the perfect base for the application of Carboline carboguard 890, a highly chemical-resistant epoxy mastic coating that adds 50% greater corrosion resistance than any other hydraulic door offered in this category. Shot blasting allows an added layer of inspection of the steel for rare imperfections which remain unseen in non shot blasted door systems.

The quality control doesn't stop there!  Our patented Hydroswing® bow truss (US D584,831S) is unique in the industry and use only premium hydraulic lines, hoses and connectors. To make our standards complete, we also use only UL certified controls motors and pumps.  It’s all about quality. It’s Hydroswing. Hydroswing Then and Now – Always Raising the Bar Higher

Hydraulics are always evolving. Hydroswing® is always evolving. Back in the day, operators turned a crank to raise and lower cable lift dump trucks.  Enter hydraulics and the dynamics of the dump truck are transformed.  A horizontal hydraulic ram and lever simplified and changed an entire industry. And so it is with the Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door.  It won’t be long before slider, roller and bifold doors go by the way of the cable lift dump truck. Door systems have been transformed by the power of hydraulics: simple and reliable solutions for any and every door problem.

Hydroswing® was born in agriculture. Farmers needed easy, reliable doors for sheds, barns and production facilities.  They didn’t want to worry about pulleys, straps and broken parts. The early Hydroswing® doors were medium (comparatively speaking) in size, yet always extremely efficient, and farmers believed and trusted the fluid power and simplicity of hydraulics. Hydroswing® was on the move.

1998 the first Hydroswing door.

The DNA of the modern day Hydroswing® was built in agriculture but quickly evolved to include all sectors. With over 7,000 sold to date in aviation, agriculture, industry and architectural market sectors, the future holds endless possibilities.  Technological advancements and cutting edge design have made Hydroswing® the industry leader.  Today’s Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door replaces almost all door systems with strength, efficiency, value, aesthetics, reduced maintenance and versatility.

2014 ISO 9001/AWS D1.1 compliant Hydroswing doors rolling out of the factory complete in their epoxy Carboline Primer 890 paint after shot blasting.

Over the years, as budgets around the world became leaner and with higher sensitivity to re-use and maintenance, Hydroswing® found a way to produce the same high quality doors at a lower price. In all critical environments, less moving parts usually means greater ease of use, less cost of ownership, lower in life service costs, ease of local repair in the event of failure, simplicity of understanding and ease of replacement of old and unserviceable former doors.

The Hydroswing® single panel door system, like no other on the market paves the way to expand and grow in a market which is late to change and react.  By changing the way new and existing buildings function via implementation of the Hydroswing® it will lead to new efficiencies in building and wall designs.

Once produced only in the United States, Hydroswing® is now fully fabricated and engineered in ISO 9001 facilities worldwide. Evolution is a natural process, and Hydroswing is a natural selection for all your door needs from 10’ wide to 150’ wide and now up to 45’ tall.

The History of Hydraulics – Still Going Strong

The word “hydraulic” comes from the Greek ‘hydra’ which refers to water and ‘aulos’ which means pipes.  Science historians believe that hydraulics (in an extremely basic form) originated in the Greek civilization two millennia ago.  The mathematician, Archimedes, reasoned that “a floating or immersed body must be acted upon an upward force equal to weight of the liquid that it displaces.”

As time passed, science improved, technology was beginning to take shape and ways to effectively use hydraulic energy were being discovered.  It all began with how water physically behaved at rest or in motion, and evolved from how to generate power with water at the source, to how to generate power at different points of use. Soon, the concept of transmitting power by putting fluids under pressure changed the face of engineering.

In the late 17th century, the study of using oil in hydraulics started to get some legs. French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, created at law in fluid mechanics stating “that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the pressure variations (initial differences) remain the same.” This became known as Pascal’s Law and created the fundamentals for the science of hydraulics.

Enter English inventor Joseph Bramah. Based on Pascal’s Law, Bramah invented the hydraulic press. His understanding of the relationship between force, pressure and area forever changed engineering and industry.  Bramah demonstrated that pressure throughout a closed system is constant and he was granted a patent for his product in 1795. By the time Britain’s industrial revolution hit in 1850, hydraulics were being used in a multitude of industries.  The twentieth century saw fluid power through hydraulic replacing electrical systems and the rest, as they say, is history.

Greenham Common used hydraulic doors to seal in safety and seal out nuclear blast. Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force in WW II and most famously by the US Air Force as a major Cold War Nuclear Strike Base. From late 1967, Greenham Common was used for NATO operations in deterrence of the Eastern Block countries. The missile bunkers seen here were designed with their hydraulic doors to withstand the local airbursting of a point strike on the West’s front line deterrent from the East, showing the unique ability of the Hydraulic door system to carry strength and integrity to such a level… and they are still in existence today for all to see as part of the Cold War history.

Today, Hydroswing® is proud to be the pioneer in hydraulic doors. Our superior technology has allowed us to engineer single panel hydraulic doors that replace doors with mechanical and electrical drives.  We have taken hydraulic door systems to the next level and are changing the world one door at time. Don’t you want to be a part of our door revolution?

The Strength of a Hydroswing Hydraulic Door

Hurricane season is here. Hydroswing’s phone lines are lighting up as customers from severe weather zones begin to prepare. Customer after customer tells the tale of lesser doors on their own hangars and structures that turn to rubble, while neighbors with a Hydroswing® Door stood steady and strong. We’ve heard reports of bits and pieces of bifold doors on the ground at the end of the storm, while the Hydroswing® on the property remained virtually unaffected.

According to a report on risks of hurricane damage by Johns Hopkins University, “In a hurricane, gusts of wind can be expected to be 25% to 50% higher than the sustained wind velocity. Thus, a hurricane with sustained winds of 150 mph may produce gusts exceeding 200 mph. The effect of a storm's wind is best evaluated in terms of the pressure it exerts. Pressure varies with the square of the velocity, meaning that pressures increases very rapidly with increasing wind velocity. For example, a 100 mph wind exerts a pressure of about 40 pounds per square foot on a flat surface, while a 190 mph wind would exert a force of 122 pounds per square foot. As an example, in a 100 mph wind, a 4x8 sheet of plywood would be thrown by up to 1100 pounds of force.”

Building owners need to be ready, and with a Hydroswing® you’ve got a better chance to protect your investments. Today, with budgets tight, it’s more important than ever to take every precaution to make your building structurally sound. Statistics prove approximately 80% of hurricane wind damage initiates with wind entry through the largest opening of a structure. This means that securing that opening greatly increases the chances of the survival of that structure – and the protection of its contents. According to the same study, “Garage door failure was a significant cause of damage during past hurricanes. The most common failure was deflection of the garage door from wind pressure until the tracks rotated and the door rollers separated from the tracks. Loss of doors resulted in envelope breach and a sudden increase in internal pressure.” This same theory will hold true for your hangar or warehouse door that is on rollers. With no rollers to consider, and single panel construction, the Hydroswing® is a must in hard weather and wind locations.

After witnessing Hydroswing superiority (up to 200 MPH wind loading) for themselves, many weather-wary Gulf Coast residents are trading up to Hydroswing as well. If you’re an existing Hydroswing customer, you can rest easy knowing that when this severe weather season is over, you and your investments will remain safe and protected behind the sturdiest, most secure door system on the market... and if you’re not... make the move to replace now, or you may regret it later.

Looking to Replace your Hangar Door?

Hydroswing® takes pride in meeting the needs of aircraft owners and facilities worldwide. Whether it’s new build hangars and the retrofit market, or replacing yesteryear’s aging number of unserviceable hangar doors, Hydroswing® brings the best to the marketplace.

The main issues facing airports and airfield owners, operators and tenants are the cost of hangar door replacement, return on investment, increase in door size, overall efficiency and the time it takes to install. The question Hydroswing® hears most is “do I have to replace my building or over build its door end structure?” The answer is NO. In most instances, you don’t have to scrap your building, just because your old door system is beyond economic service.

The Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door easily replaces bifold, bottom rolling, concertina, stacking, barn, fabric, sectional/sliding and large roller shutter doors, in aviation facilities, private hangars, helicopter hangars and MRO facilities around the globe. There is minimal load and reaction levels to existing structures because Hydrowswing® is pre hung on in its own frame. This allows for a simple removal of old door and in many cases, no additional structural work. Our customers quickly see the benefits of “going big,” increasing the height to the eaves, and increasing the size of the hangar to the maximum of the building frame width or section.

If you’re in aviation, you’ve seen bad doors. Broken (and dangerous) bi-folds, torn fabric sliders, self-built disasters, and inefficient rollers and stackers can cost more than they’re worth to repair. Chains, pulleys, straps and too many parts can invariably lead to a break down and possibly an accident where someone may be injured or even killed. So isn’t it time for a change?

Cost effective, safe, and accommodating in sizes up to 150’(45.0 m) wide  X 40’(12.0 m) high, our hydraulic door is being retrofitted in commercial aviation facilities, private airplane and helicopter hangars alike. Simplicity, strength, ease of use and reduction in moving parts, plus use of cladding (which makes the door match the thermal characteristics of the building) are among the top reasons customers are making the switch to Hydroswing®. The sophistication of single panel hydraulic doors is now part of everyday door use across the aviation sector.

Introducing Hydroswing® Leasing -The Best and Original Hydroswing® Hydraulic Door Can now be Leased as Equipment

It’s no secret that equipment leasing is a leading choice for the agriculture, aviation and industrial sectors.  With equipment being the mainstay, owners have looked to leasing to help the cash flow crunch while allowing them to quickly acquire the latest technology. Since 1960 private fixed investment in equipment increased from $29.7 billion to almost $1 trillion in 2012. In 2013, that number continued to rise. Nonetheless, the economy has made it difficult for businesses to part with cash, even though they are in need of new equipment. Leasing solves that problem. And now Hydroswing® enters the arena and expands the possibilities across all sectors. A door is no longer a door. Thanks to Hydroswing® Leasing, any hydraulic door we manufacture can be considered a piece of working capital equipment.

In agriculture alone, leasing of equipment exceeds $6 billion in annual volume in the United States. In aviation, approximately 30% of the world’s aircraft are leased, and that number continues to increase. Leasing works and Hydroswing® is on board. Hydroswing® Leasing is the first program of its kind to offer hydraulic doors as equipment: No money down, low payments ($49.99 per week) and a $1.00 buyout at the end of the lease. There will always be more old buildings than new, and with a Hydroswing® lease, it’s easier than ever to replace your obsolete door system and enjoy the efficiency and advanced technology of the original Hydroswing® hydraulic door.

Leasing a door is not as complicated as it seems. It’s a painless process that preserve your line of credit, let you keep your cash flow in place and can immediately add value to your business.  In addition, lessees can take an immediate write-off of dollars spent rather than waiting for equipment or storage facilities to depreciate over several years. You’ll also have the option of deduction 100% of your lease payment as a business expense. To make the package complete, a Hydroswing® lease allows for opportunity to eliminate or minimize shipping and install costs. It’s a “win win” all the way around.

Hydroswing® Leasing is a game changer for industry. Hydroswing® has over 7,000 doors in use and is being manufactured in ISO 9001 approved global manufacturing plants worldwide. Hydraulics are the most effective door choice. The advantages: Less than 70% of the moving parts of the bifold door and 50% less moving parts than sectional, bottom rolling, or top hung doors with 95% less maintenance costs. The Hydroswing® easily retro fits to replace the bi-fold, bottom rolling, top hung, sectional or fabric doors, and is ideal for new builds, steel, post and frame or block structure. Now everything is possible with a Hydroswing® door.

It's Time for a Hydraulic Door

Retrofit is defined as a “modification to equipment that is already in service using parts developed or made after the time of the original manufacturer.” When it comes to doors (or walls), it’s easy to retrofit almost any opening with a Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door. Whether you’re in aviation or agriculture, you’ve seen bad doors.

The original Hydroswing® hydraulic door is the ideal replacement for any kind of door on any kind of structure. Because our pre hung design, we can retrofit both large small building doors with little or no impact to the existing building. These minimal load and reaction levels to existing structures allow a simple removal of old door and, in most instances, no additional structural work. Customers are seeing the benefits of “going big” and increasing height and width to maximum clearance.

The Hydroswing® is operated by two dual-acting hydraulic rams powered by a single or three-phase motor and pump. This in itself provides an extra layer of safety because the Hydrowswing® is impossible to operate without access to the control unit, making it far more secure than other types of doors.

Replacing old facility doors with the low maintenance seal-ability and strength of a Hydroswing® is a smart, safe move. With almost zero in life service costs (creating a fast and high return on investment) the Hydroswing® is ready to go “pillar to pillar” and right to the header. The wider you go with a Hydroswing®, the better value it becomes. Isn’t it time to step into the future and retrofit your outdated door?
