The history of the Quonset hut (or Quonset “building”) dates back to World War l. In 1941, the US Navy was in need of an all-purpose, lightweight building that could be shipped anywhere and assembled without skilled labor. The Quonset hut was modeled after the Nissen hut which had previously been designed by the British. The name “Quonset” comes from the site of where the hut was first manufactured, Quonset Point, at the (now closed) Davisville Naval Construction Battalion Center in Davisville, Rhode Island.

 

The Quonset is usually constructed with corrugated galvanized steel. This lightweight prefabricated structure became a mainstay in war time for its strong demeanor and quick assembly. Between 150,000 and 170,000 Quonset huts were manufactured during World War II, with the surplus being sold to the public. The most common design created a standard size of 20 ft. × 48 ft. (6 m × 15 m) with 10 ft. (3 m) radius, allowing 720 square feet (67 m²) of usable floor space, with optional four-foot (1.2 m) overhangs at each end for protection of entrances from the weather. Other sizes were developed, including 20 ft. × 40 ft. (6 m × 12 m) and 40 ft. × 100 ft. (12 m × 30 m) warehouse models.

 

Over the years, the Quonset has been adapted for commercial use across a number of sectors. With flexible interior space possibilities, the natural fit has invariably been agriculture. The History of Hydraulics – Still Going Strong

The word “hydraulic” comes from the Greek ‘hydra’ which refers to water and ‘aulos’ which means pipes.  Science historians believe that hydraulics (in an extremely basic form) originated in the Greek civilization two millennia ago.  The mathematician, Archimedes, reasoned that “a floating or immersed body must be acted upon an upward force equal to weight of the liquid that it displaces.”

As time passed, science improved, technology was beginning to take shape and ways to effectively use hydraulic energy were being discovered.  It all began with how water physically behaved at rest or in motion, and evolved from how to generate power with water at the source, to how to generate power at different points of use. Soon, the concept of transmitting power by putting fluids under pressure changed the face of engineering.  

In the late 17th century, the study of using oil in hydraulics started to get some legs. French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, created at law in fluid mechanics stating “that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the pressure variations (initial differences) remain the same.” This became known as Pascal’s Law and created the fundamentals for the science of hydraulics.

 

Enter English inventor Joseph Bramah. Based on Pascal’s Law, Bramah invented the hydraulic press. His understanding of the relationship between force, pressure and area forever changed engineering and industry.  Bramah demonstrated that pressure throughout a closed system is constant and he was granted a patent for his product in 1795. By the time Britain’s industrial revolution hit in 1850, hydraulics were being used in a multitude of industries.  The twentieth century saw fluid power through hydraulic replacing electrical systems and the rest, as they say, is history.  


Greenham Common used hydraulic doors to seal in safety and seal out nuclear blast. Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force in WW II and most famously by the US Air Force as a major Cold War Nuclear Strike Base. From late 1967, Greenham Common was used for NATO operations in deterrence of the Eastern Block countries. The missile bunkers seen here were designed with their hydraulic doors to withstand the local airbursting of a point strike on the West’s front line deterrent from the East, showing the unique ability of the Hydraulic door system to carry strength and integrity to such a level… and they are still in existence today for all to see as part of the Cold War history.

 According to a report on risks of hurricane damage by Johns Hopkins University, “In a hurricane, gusts of wind can be expected to be 25% to 50% higher than the sustained wind velocity. Thus, a hurricane with sustained winds of 150 mph may produce gusts exceeding 200 mph. The effect of a storm's wind is best evaluated in terms of the pressure it exerts. Pressure varies with the square of the velocity, meaning that pressures increases very rapidly with increasing wind velocity. For example, a 100 mph wind exerts a pressure of about 40 pounds per square foot on a flat surface, while a 190 mph wind would exert a force of 122 pounds per square foot. As an example, in a 100 mph wind, a 4x8 sheet of plywood would be thrown by up to 1100 pounds of force.”

Post frame construction has its deep roots in agriculture. This kind of building came to prominence in the 1930s. Poles (usually telephone poles which in turn lead to the name “pole barn”) were sunk into the ground and steel roofing and siding was put into place to complete the structure. This was a short list for foundational material and it simplified the barn construction process. The telephone poles were later replaced by chemically treated sawn posts, then metal plates were introduced that connected the trusses and roof spans began to increase.
