Everything you need to know about Hydraulic Doors for Aviation, Agriculture, Industrial & Architectural use

How’s it Hanging... Hydroswing’s Detailed Mounting Protocols Show How it’s Done

Simple, strong, secure… that’s our motto at Hydroswing®. Whether it’s retrofit or a new build, we are dedicated to having the easiest and most efficient process in the industry. If you need a hydraulic door, not only will we customize it for your space, we make sure you know how it works. Our “Mounting Protocols” demonstrate to all door owners the intricate details of how the door can be hung. We offer illustrations of everything from product attachments and positions of the door for installation, to the anatomy of the Hydroswing® door and full descriptions of different types of headers.

Customization is one of our most important selling points so it’s critical that our customers know our “attach angle” can be made to mount our door to metal girders, concrete, block or wood buildings. Then the door will be bolted or welded in place per the protocols. (We don’t supply the headers or door pillars, but we do survey large doors and will engineer flanges to brace the existing door pillars and the Hydroswing® door jamb.)

Also key for most Hydroswing® door owners is “how” the door will be mounted. Our protocols detail three ways: Inside or Flush Mounting (where the door inside the building header and jamb making it flush with the face of the building), Outside Mounting (which is common in existing buildings and the door will fit against the face of the building) and Rear Mounting (this would connect the door to the rear of your building).

Whatever your questions, we have the answers and our downloadable protocols will guide the way. Simplicity, strength, ease of use and reduction in moving parts, plus use of cladding (which makes the door match the thermal characteristics of the building) are among the top reasons customers are making the switch to Hydroswing®. The sophistication of our single panel hydraulic door system is now part of everyday door use for facilities large and small across the U.S. and around the world. The Hydroswing® single panel door system is like no other. Through the implementation of the Hydroswing® we lead to new efficiencies in building and wall designs. Remember, if it doesn’t come from Hydroswing®, it’s not a Hydroswing®.

The History of Hydraulics – Still Going Strong

The word “hydraulic” comes from the Greek ‘hydra’ which refers to water and ‘aulos’ which means pipes.  Science historians believe that hydraulics (in an extremely basic form) originated in the Greek civilization two millennia ago.  The mathematician, Archimedes, reasoned that “a floating or immersed body must be acted upon an upward force equal to weight of the liquid that it displaces.”

As time passed, science improved, technology was beginning to take shape and ways to effectively use hydraulic energy were being discovered.  It all began with how water physically behaved at rest or in motion, and evolved from how to generate power with water at the source, to how to generate power at different points of use. Soon, the concept of transmitting power by putting fluids under pressure changed the face of engineering.

In the late 17th century, the study of using oil in hydraulics started to get some legs. French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, created at law in fluid mechanics stating “that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the pressure variations (initial differences) remain the same.” This became known as Pascal’s Law and created the fundamentals for the science of hydraulics.

Enter English inventor Joseph Bramah. Based on Pascal’s Law, Bramah invented the hydraulic press. His understanding of the relationship between force, pressure and area forever changed engineering and industry.  Bramah demonstrated that pressure throughout a closed system is constant and he was granted a patent for his product in 1795. By the time Britain’s industrial revolution hit in 1850, hydraulics were being used in a multitude of industries.  The twentieth century saw fluid power through hydraulic replacing electrical systems and the rest, as they say, is history.

Greenham Common used hydraulic doors to seal in safety and seal out nuclear blast. Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force in WW II and most famously by the US Air Force as a major Cold War Nuclear Strike Base. From late 1967, Greenham Common was used for NATO operations in deterrence of the Eastern Block countries. The missile bunkers seen here were designed with their hydraulic doors to withstand the local airbursting of a point strike on the West’s front line deterrent from the East, showing the unique ability of the Hydraulic door system to carry strength and integrity to such a level… and they are still in existence today for all to see as part of the Cold War history.

Today, Hydroswing® is proud to be the pioneer in hydraulic doors. Our superior technology has allowed us to engineer single panel hydraulic doors that replace doors with mechanical and electrical drives.  We have taken hydraulic door systems to the next level and are changing the world one door at time. Don’t you want to be a part of our door revolution?

Ordinary to Extraordinary - Architectural Hydraulic Doors

14. April 2014 14:34 by Hydroswing in Architectural Doors

Architecture is constantly evolving… The trend in contemporary architectural design is to unite indoor and outdoor living spaces. With hydraulics in play, the functionality of doors and walls completely changes.  The Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door system has become a blank canvas for the adventurous architects who specialize in high profile homes, commercial buildings and other special applications. In the past, architects were limited by how doors and walls function, but now the possibilities are endless. Walls up to 150' (45m) wide and 40' (12m) tall can be converted into artistic, useful and cost effective hydraulic doors that can create a unique and completely functional indoor/outdoor experience. With almost 100% seal-ability, design dynamics with a Hydroswing® hydraulic door are revolutionizing the way architects can create buildings and homes.

Think of what can happen when walls become doors and doors become walls. Architectural problems can be solved and boundaries can be moved. Innovative design can be incorporated into existing structures (or new builds) and the overall schematics of outside walls can expand. The Hydroswing® for architecture can be built to totally change anything from a single wall (or door) in a custom home to an entire commercial building. Where sliding windows and bifolds used to be standard for restaurants with outside patios, hydraulic doors can now be used to enhance light, maximize space, and will revolutionize the way architects include outdoor environments in the scope of their design. With the touch of button, the single panel door can transform hotels, stadiums, bars, restaurants, garages, homes and any other kind of structure that wants to “move a wall.” The added bonus: With the door in an “up” position, shade and protection are immediately created.

The simplicity and safety of the hydraulic door removes the need for cables and counter weights used in so many ambitious architectural projects and curved facades. The Hydroswing® isn’t a “knock off” of an agricultural door – ours is the original and most sophisticated design on the market today. Engineered for performance and precision, the door can be easily installed to match building profiles with glass, wood, or heavy and ornate finishes. Hydroswing® doors lift easily and quietly with ease from the power of the hydraulic single panel door system. We can customize any installation and the sky’s the limit in terms of design. Our hydraulic cylinders can be powder coated or chromed to match or complement the interior door colors to seamlessly connect indoor and outdoor spaces.

Hydroswing® is the industry expert in silently and effortlessly moving structures, and we offer a new frontier for imaginative and leading edge architects around the globe.

Biomass and Renewable Energy – A Market on the Move

Biomass energy is a hot topic. With a consumption increase of over 60% from 2002 to 2013, it’s easy to see why this sector is growing at such a rapid rate. Biomass is defined as “biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. Both plant and animal.” Even though wood is considered to be the most prolific source of biomass energy, agriculture is currently producing huge amounts of biomass residue that can be converted to energy.  In 2013, half of all the renewable energy consumed worldwide came from biomass, with the U.S. number coming in at 5%.  (That 5% is enough power to accommodate close to a half a million homes.) The U.K. and Europe are already on the fast track to successful biomass energy platforms, and it’s catching on across the globe. According to recent reports, the use of biomass for energy could change the face of agriculture and provide farmers in the U.S. alone up to $20 billion in new income.

The goal is to convert crop residue, manure and other agricultural byproducts into renewable energy sources. As farmers are learning how to capture and store these resources, they are gaining new revenue streams by producing energy while reducing disposal costs. According to Ag Energy Solutions, farmers can profit from “manure, corn stalks, woody-brush, or even weeds and grasses. By utilizing more of the biological material that grows on the farm, farmers can gain more value from each acre. And because biomass is renewable, and it’s easy to replace harvested trees or crops; these energy-rich waste materials are sustainable indefinitely.”

In addition to large, industrial facilities, farmers are beginning to construct buildings (within the guidelines and regulations of their rural area) specifically designed to house biomass. These multifunctional structures are made to store and protect the contents from moisture while creating space to burn and/or transport the material to biomass processing plants.  And Hydroswing® is there too. Our single panel hydraulic doors offer almost complete seal-ability, and with the wide variety of size options, they are the right door at the right time in the right sector.

A current article in Biomass Magazine stated the “USDA Farm Service Agency recently announced the expansion of its Farm Storage and Facility Loan program, which provides low-interest financing to producers. With regard to bioenergy, the loan program can provide low-interest funds to build or upgrade permanent facilities to store eligible commodities, including renewable biomass.”

With the ability to retro fit to existing buildings or apply to new build, the Hydroswing® adds size, ease of use and value to the processes in the biomass and renewable sector and can easily withstand the rigors of waste and recycling.  Pre hung in its own frame, the Hydroswing® can deliver zero load and reaction to the building is required to be fitted to a tensile or none structural building. Whether high cycling rates or long periods for seasonal storage and holding buildings, the Hydroswing® hydraulic door provides a greater array of working and process efficiencies than traditional sectional, overhead or roller doors with industry leading ROI.

The way we capture and use energy is changing.  The E.U. is already dedicated to the cause and has a goal of 20% of their energy being created by renewables by 2020. The U.S. is catching up and hopes to have 25% dedicated to the same faction by 2015. Hydroswing® remains on the cutting edge of all sectors of industry by providing a product that will easily adapt and play a role in existing facilities and new facilities that are being built to promote this commitment to new energy.

The Bifold Hangar Door… Inferior by design

Technology has moved on from wires, cables, pulleys and straps. The world is becoming simpler and safer. Hydraulic doors will soon be the only logical choice for not only aviation, but for agriculture, architecture and mining sectors as well. From a safety perspective, by its very nature, the bifold door is outdated and potentially dangerous.  We recently completed an installation in the U.K. that demonstrates exactly why bifolds are an endangered species.

We were called us about replacing two doors at the Brighton Airport (Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, United Kingdom). The existing bifold doors were only three years old and one (at the Real Flying Company) had fallen down completely as a result of wire cable failure, the other (at Advance Helicopters) was an accident waiting to happen. Having narrowly missed the operator on site, the owner wanted to quickly dispose of a potentially dangerous situation and start new with a stronger, simpler, safer hydraulic Hydroswing® door solution. The operationally unsound bifolds were products of Express Hi Fold Ltd. (a known knock off of an American product by a similar name) and rely on wire cables connected to a chain driven winding axle drum.  With such a high number of moving parts, the risk of failure increases exponentially.

Hydroswing® was an easy choice for Apollo. Our hydraulic Hydroswing® door is a single panel, has greater strength through design and steel size, 70% less moving parts than the substandard bifold, and is now manufactured in several ISO 9001 facilities around the world, including Great Britain. The door dimensions at Shoreham 60’(18.28m) x 17’(5.18m) and 55’(16.76m) x 17’(5.18m) respectively, were quickly retrofitted with Hydroswing® which in turn immediately provided an additional three feet of tail clearance. Our zero drop two-way Hydrolok™ system also assures the door will never fall should there ever be a loss of hydraulic power.

The bifolds that were torn out have no frame so the retro fit was simple. (It usually only takes two days to fit any opening.) The Hydroswing® is built to fit easily pre hung in its own frame directly into the rough opening and welded straight to the header and uprights of the building. The vastly superior Hydroswing® also provides peace of mind when it’s open, closed or moving: No wires. No straps. No chains with axles or cogs. Most bifolds require supplementary contraptions to hold them in place while closed. Not the Hydroswing® - with almost 100% seal-ability, the door remains tight. These two Hydroswing® doors at Shoreham also incorporate our patented Bow Truss Technology, providing leading edge strength and aesthetics worthy of an architectural install. This special truss also gives “at a glance” certainty of the origin and integrity of this latest generation Hydroswing® hangar door system.

The current trend shows more and more aviation facilities stepping away from the old and now outdated bifolds in favor of the safety, simplicity and effectiveness of Hydroswing®. (Note: A number of the well known Bifold manufacturers are trying to copy and emulate the Hydroswing® design. Keep in mind if it’s not from Hydroswing®… it’s not a Hydroswing®.) We proudly boast over 7,000 Hydroswing® in service and a growing number of bifold replacements and retrofit orders are coming in on a regular basis. Hydroswing® continues to change the general aviation hangar door sector for good. The Hydroswing® hangar door systems are the right choice:
