More and more, the news about bifolds is bad. After multiple deaths in the U.S. and Europe, it won’t be long before the bifold is banned for good. Because of the way the majority of bifolds are built, there is no anti-drop mechanism or other device to prevent the door from from free-falling if there is a failure in the drive or suspension mechanism. Clearly, this is a hazard and has proven fatal in some door accidents.
Recently, two people were killed in the in the U.K. where a bifold dropped. This prompted an investigation by the Health & Safety Executive who determined the door hazardous. In April of 2014, a man was killed in Minnesota after being wrapped around an unprotected lower winding shaft (See the article here: http://cbsloc.al/1kw0wyr.) As long ago as 2002, according to OSHA and the US Department of Labor a death occurred because of a bifold door. “Apparently because the saddle clamps had been installed improperly. One cable, immediately adjacent to the loosened cable was missing entirely, and the door began moving downward on the right side. The tilting caused the door roller to come out of its track. The lower portion of the door then struck an Employee.” (See the report here: http://1.usa.gov/1DvHhiT.) It’s evident that several bifold manufacturers continue to operate without even the slightest compliance or self-governance.
Technology has moved on from wires, cables, pulleys and straps. The world is becoming simpler and safer. Hydraulic doors will soon be the only logical choice for not only aviation, but for agriculture, architecture and mining sectors as well. From a safety perspective, by its very nature, the bifold door is outdated and dangerous.
The Hydroswing® Hydraulic Door is a single panel hydraulic door solution that replaces ALL bifold doors. We have all safety standards in place and our doors are manufactured at ISO 9001 certified plants and to AWS D1.1 standards. Our zero drop two-way Hydrolok system assures the door will never fall should there ever be a loss of power. No cables. No pulleys. No straps. NO DANGER. We proudly boast over 7,000 Hydroswing® in service and a growing number of bi-fold replacements are coming in on a regular basis. We can retrofit any building or any opening.
In addition to safety, replacing a bifold is also a smart value proposition. In many instances the useful service life of a door is defined by the economic viability of replacing a dangerous, inefficient bifold. Installing a new Hydroswing hydraulic door system transforms your structure and extends the life of your building. By removing the bifold door and replacing it with the simple, pre-hung single panel Hydroswing® door system, a structure is revitalized at a fraction of the cost of a new build. With no impact to the existing building, easy installation (usually only one day), very low maintenance costs, increased overhead space and 90% fewer moving parts than the bifold, Hydroswing is quickly becoming the number one replacement door in the world.

The bi-fold door is making headlines across Europe… and as usual, it’s bad news. Following a double fatality, the Express Hi Fold Door and Schweiss Hi Folding Doors UK Limited are declared HAZARDOUS by the Health and Safety Executive in Britain!
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently sent a country-wide letter “to all known users of powered overhead, bi-folding sectional doors manufactured, supplied or installed by Express Hi Fold Doors Limited or Schweiss Folding Doors UK Limited” stating these doors “currently do not have an anti-drop mechanism or other device to prevent the free fall of the door in the event of a drive of suspension failure.” (An anti-drop mechanism is required by the European Safety Directive and European Standards.)
There is no doubt the BI-FOLD IS A DANGEROUS DOOR! The HSE continues that “Without an anti-drop mechanism or other device, any failure of the drive or suspension system will result in the door free falling. This is clearly very hazardous…” Further, the HSE recommends “As there is NO anti-drop mechanism or device available, we are writing to all known users to encourage you to TAKE THE DOOR OUT OF SERVICE….. UNTIL IT CAN BE REPLACED.” The HSE will be enforcing action against those who do not take steps to replace the door.

Sustainable means “pertaining to a system that maintains its own viability by using techniques that allow for continual reuse.” By replacing bifold or roller shutter doors with a Hydroswing® single panel agricultural door on your equipment and/or process buildings, you will probably never have to replace the door again. Hydroswing® is a sustainable solution to all your door needs.
The simplicity of a single panel hydraulic door compared to bifold and roller shutter doors changes face of agricultural buildings. With a Hydroswing®, (complete in its own frame, pre hung, ready to go “pillar to pillar” and right to the header), the wider you go, the better value it becomes. Safe and easy-to-use, the Hydroswing® provides almost zero in life service costs and therefore a guaranteed return on your investment.
When farmers, ranchers and biomass producers consider the potential for door replacement in their older buildings, more and more they are turning to the single panel hydraulic door solution. With internal personnel doors, wind loadings to cope with forces of 200 MPH and strength to keep valuable machinery locked in and secure, the Hydroswing® offers the most attractive and cost effective source in the marketplace today. (Financing made easier than ever through our new equipment leasing program. ) For tractor security, plant and machinery security, Hydroswing® is the only choice for farm, biomass fuel, industrial and grain storage building doors.
The difference is clear to see in the photo above, where one of three buildings has had two roller shutter doors replaced by one efficient, single panel hydraulic door. This addition adds door size, value, and in some instances, may allow you to use old buildings in ways previously not thought possible without constructing a new building. Concentrating on what you do with your building or shed is more important to your bottom line than replacing a door every two or three years.
The Hydroswing® will not pop out of its rails, rust away, flap in the wind, or allow pigeons or other birds in via the roller. With 70% less moving parts than a bifold, the Hydroswing® seals all the way round its own frame, and if required for food regulations, can be made 100% rodent proof.
Add value, size and efficiency by replacing your warn out or dangerous bifold or roller shutter doors to your biomass fuel store, grain store or agricultural buildings with a Hydroswing®. Sustain your door for years to come. Buy or lease a Hydroswing today.
The bi-fold door is once again in the news… and once again, it’s not good. Over the years, this kind of door has been linked to countless accidents and multiple deaths. On April 1, 2014 it happened again. According to CBS news in Minnesota, “A northern Minnesota man died Tuesday morning, officials say, after his jacket got caught in a large door at his work. It happened at Bagley Hardwood Products at around 8:40 a.m. The 41-year-old Fosston, Minn., man was standing next to a 40-by-20 foot bi-fold door as it opened. He got caught in some cables and pulled up to his death, the Bagley Police Department said.” Read the full article here.
In 2002, according to the US Department of Labor, “one of five lifting, hoisting cables came unfastened at one end of a bi-fold door, apparently because the saddle clamps had been installed improperly. One cable, immediately adjacent to the loosened cable was missing entirely, and the door began moving downward on the right side. The tilting caused the door roller to come out of its track. The lower portion of the door then struck Employee #1. He was taken to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.”
The photos below were taken from a recent bi-fold breakdown at Apollo Aviation, LTD at the Brighton Airport (Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, United Kingdom). The existing doors were only three years old and one had fallen down completely as a result of wire cable failure, the other was an accident waiting to happen. Having narrowly missed the operator on site, Apollo wanted to quickly dispose of a potentially dangerous situation and start new with a stronger, simpler, safer hydraulic door solution.
The bi-fold door filled a need when it was first introduced to the market. It was the only game in town and seemed the logical choice for anyone looking for a door for their facility or hangar. There weren’t other options available, but now there are. Everything is different in the door world. Technology has improved, safety is a concern, and the bi-fold doesn’t make sense. On bi-folds, the pulleys and drive chains are exposed to the stress of constant movement and run the risk of slipping out or breaking down. The awkward fold, with its pulleys and straps, are cumbersome and can clearly be dangerous. Is it really worth the risk to have a bi-fold door?
Hydroswing® Hydraulic Doors are a single panel hydraulic solution with 70% less moving parts. Our zero drop two-way Hydrolok system also assures the door will never fall should there ever be a loss of power. No cables. No pulleys. No Straps.
The choice is yours.
