Total Cost of Ownership – A Hydroswing Door is the Best Long Term Investment for your Hangar

ISO 9001/ AWS D1.1 – Because Quality Matters

Hydroswing® is synonymous with quality. From the beginning, our standards have been the highest in the industry.  All Hydroswing® doors are fabricated in ISO 9001 facilities that adhere to the American Welding Society (AWS) D1.1 code requirements for welding of structural steel. Unlike other manufacturers, we understand the importance of working within specific codes and with vendors who boast an ISO certification. ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is the largest developer in the world of voluntary International Standards.  An independent and non-governmental membership organization at work in 165 countries, ISO began in London in 1946 with a goal to “facilitate the international coordination and unification of industrial standards.” Today, ISO has published over 19,500 International Standards covering almost all of manufacturing and technology.

 

 ISO 9001 is part of the ISO 9000 “family of quality management systems standards” designed to help manufacturers meet statutory and regulatory requirements related to a product.  A third party certification provides an “independent confirmation” that companies meet the requirements of ISO 9001. So what does the mean for Hydroswing® customers? It means we are confident in our selected vendors and we pass that quality to our end users.  The ISO 9001 facilities we work with have Quality Management Systems (QMS) in place and are stringently audited for welding and quality assurance. The hydraulic components are sourced centrally in the United States for further continuous quality and supply chain integrity.

 

At Hydroswing®, fabrication quality is just one area we set ourselves apart from others. Our welding is always to AWS D1.1 code which covers the requirements for “any type of welded structure made from the commonly used carbon and low-alloy constructional steels.”  Another example of our quality systems is our shot blasting pre-paint. This ensures the perfect base for the application of Carboline carboguard 890, a highly chemical-resistant epoxy mastic coating that adds 50% greater corrosion resistance than any other hydraulic door offered in this category. Shot blasting allows an added layer of inspection of the steel for rare imperfections which remain unseen in non shot blasted door systems.

Biomass and Renewable Energy – A Market on the Move

Biomass energy is a hot topic. With a consumption increase of over 60% from 2002 to 2013, it’s easy to see why this sector is growing at such a rapid rate. Biomass is defined as “biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. Both plant and animal.” Even though wood is considered to be the most prolific source of biomass energy, agriculture is currently producing huge amounts of biomass residue that can be converted to energy.  In 2013, half of all the renewable energy consumed worldwide came from biomass, with the U.S. number coming in at 5%.  (That 5% is enough power to accommodate close to a half a million homes.) The U.K. and Europe are already on the fast track to successful biomass energy platforms, and it’s catching on across the globe. According to recent reports, the use of biomass for energy could change the face of agriculture and provide farmers in the U.S. alone up to $20 billion in new income.   

 

The goal is to convert crop residue, manure and other agricultural byproducts into renewable energy sources. As farmers are learning how to capture and store these resources, they are gaining new revenue streams by producing energy while reducing disposal costs. According to Ag Energy Solutions, farmers can profit from “manure, corn stalks, woody-brush, or even weeds and grasses. By utilizing more of the biological material that grows on the farm, farmers can gain more value from each acre. And because biomass is renewable, and it’s easy to replace harvested trees or crops; these energy-rich waste materials are sustainable indefinitely.”

 

In addition to large, industrial facilities, farmers are beginning to construct buildings (within the guidelines and regulations of their rural area) specifically designed to house biomass. These multifunctional structures are made to store and protect the contents from moisture while creating space to burn and/or transport the material to biomass processing plants.  And Hydroswing® is there too. A current article in Biomass Magazine stated the “USDA Farm Service Agency recently announced the expansion of its Farm Storage and Facility Loan program, which provides low-interest financing to producers. With regard to bioenergy, the loan program can provide low-interest funds to build or upgrade permanent facilities to store eligible commodities, including renewable biomass.”

The Bifold Hangar Door… Inferior by design

Technology has moved on from wires, cables, pulleys and straps. The world is becoming simpler and safer. Hydraulic doors will soon be the only logical choice for not only aviation, but for agriculture, architecture and mining sectors as well. From a safety perspective, by its very nature, the bifold door is outdated and potentially dangerous.  We recently completed an installation in the U.K. that demonstrates exactly why bifolds are an endangered species.  

 

We were called us about replacing two doors at the Brighton Airport (Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, United Kingdom). The existing bifold doors were only three years old and one (at the Real Flying Company) had fallen down completely as a result of wire cable failure, the other (at Advance Helicopters) was an accident waiting to happen. Having narrowly missed the operator on site, the owner wanted to quickly dispose of a potentially dangerous situation and start new with a stronger, simpler, safer hydraulic Hydroswing® door solution. The operationally unsound bifolds were products of Express Hi Fold Ltd. (a known knock off of an American product by a similar name) and rely on wire cables connected to a chain driven winding axle drum.  With such a high number of moving parts, the risk of failure increases exponentially.

 

 

 

 

 

Hydroswing® was an easy choice for Apollo. Our hydraulic Hydroswing® door is a single panel, has greater strength through design and steel size, 70% less moving parts than the substandard bifold, and is now manufactured in several ISO 9001 facilities around the world, including Great Britain. The door dimensions at Shoreham 60’(18.28m) x 17’(5.18m) and 55’(16.76m) x 17’(5.18m) respectively, were quickly retrofitted with Hydroswing® which in turn immediately provided an additional three feet of tail clearance.  The bifolds that were torn out have no frame so the retro fit was simple. (It usually only takes two days to fit any opening.) The Hydroswing® is built to fit easily pre hung in its own frame directly into the rough opening and welded straight to the header and uprights of the building. The vastly superior Hydroswing® also provides peace of mind when it’s open, closed or moving: No wires. No straps. No chains with axles or cogs. Most bifolds require supplementary contraptions to hold them in place while closed. Not the Hydroswing® - with almost 100% seal-ability, the door remains tight. These two Hydroswing® doors at Shoreham also incorporate our patented Bow Truss Technology, providing leading edge strength and aesthetics worthy of an architectural install. This special truss also gives “at a glance” certainty of the origin and integrity of this latest generation Hydroswing® hangar door system.

The Original Hydroswing - Still the First, Still the Best

In the world of hydraulic doors, original can simply be defined as "Hydroswing." Since its creation in 1996, the Hydroswing® has been the benchmark for single panel hydraulic door systems. With necessity being the mother of invention, it was only a matter of time before bifold and roller doors would be eclipsed by hydraulics, a more efficient option for aviation, agriculture and architecture sectors. Being the original hydraulic door manufacturer, we have always had an outstanding product.
