Hydroswing® was called to task to provide a solution for Airbus in England. They were looking for a specific product for the Main Wing paint booth for their A380 Super Jumbo and wanted something that would be seated well enough to the floor that it would have the efficiency of a wall but the capabilities of door. We were able to manufacture a 57’ x 28’ (18m x 8.5m) door that immediately matched their needs and retro fit their existing Durr Paint Booth in only five days. The sealabilty of the door was so tight their reduction in electricity on extraction fan speed alone generated a return on investment (ROI) in six months.

It’s Simple… Replace your Bifold Door. It’s Dangerous.

More and more, the news about bifolds is bad. After multiple deaths in the U.S. and Europe, it won’t be long before the bifold is banned for good. Because of the way the majority of bifolds are built, there is no anti-drop mechanism or other device to prevent the door from from free-falling if there is a failure in the drive or suspension mechanism. Clearly, this is a hazard and has proven fatal in some door accidents.

Recently, two people were killed in the in the U.K. where a bifold dropped. This prompted an investigation by the Health & Safety Executive who determined the door hazardous. In April of 2014, a man was killed in Minnesota after being wrapped around an unprotected lower winding shaft (See the article here: http://cbsloc.al/1kw0wyr.) As long ago as 2002, according to OSHA and the US Department of Labor a death occurred because of a bifold door. “Apparently because the saddle clamps had been installed improperly. One cable, immediately adjacent to the loosened cable was missing entirely, and the door began moving downward on the right side. The tilting caused the door roller to come out of its track. It’s evident that several bifold manufacturers continue to operate without even the slightest compliance or self-governance.

The History of Hydraulics – Still Going Strong

The word “hydraulic” comes from the Greek ‘hydra’ which refers to water and ‘aulos’ which means pipes.  Science historians believe that hydraulics (in an extremely basic form) originated in the Greek civilization two millennia ago.  The mathematician, Archimedes, reasoned that “a floating or immersed body must be acted upon an upward force equal to weight of the liquid that it displaces.”

As time passed, science improved, technology was beginning to take shape and ways to effectively use hydraulic energy were being discovered.  It all began with how water physically behaved at rest or in motion, and evolved from how to generate power with water at the source, to how to generate power at different points of use. Soon, the concept of transmitting power by putting fluids under pressure changed the face of engineering.  

In the late 17th century, the study of using oil in hydraulics started to get some legs. French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, created at law in fluid mechanics stating “that pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted equally in all directions throughout the fluid such that the pressure variations (initial differences) remain the same.” This became known as Pascal’s Law and created the fundamentals for the science of hydraulics.

 

Enter English inventor Joseph Bramah. Based on Pascal’s Law, Bramah invented the hydraulic press. His understanding of the relationship between force, pressure and area forever changed engineering and industry.  Bramah demonstrated that pressure throughout a closed system is constant and he was granted a patent for his product in 1795. By the time Britain’s industrial revolution hit in 1850, hydraulics were being used in a multitude of industries.  The twentieth century saw fluid power through hydraulic replacing electrical systems and the rest, as they say, is history.  


Greenham Common used hydraulic doors to seal in safety and seal out nuclear blast. Opened in 1942, it was used by both the Royal Air Force in WW II and most famously by the US Air Force as a major Cold War Nuclear Strike Base. From late 1967, Greenham Common was used for NATO operations in deterrence of the Eastern Block countries. The missile bunkers seen here were designed with their hydraulic doors to withstand the local airbursting of a point strike on the West’s front line deterrent from the East, showing the unique ability of the Hydraulic door system to carry strength and integrity to such a level… and they are still in existence today for all to see as part of the Cold War history.

The Strength of a Hydroswing Hydraulic Door

Hurricane season is here. Hydroswing’s phone lines are lighting up as customers from severe weather zones begin to prepare. Customer after customer tells the tale of lesser doors on their own hangars and structures that turn to rubble, while neighbors with a Hydroswing® Door stood steady and strong. We’ve heard reports of bits and pieces of bifold doors on the ground at the end of the storm, while the Hydroswing® on the property remained virtually unaffected. 

 

 According to a report on risks of hurricane damage by Johns Hopkins University, “In a hurricane, gusts of wind can be expected to be 25% to 50% higher than the sustained wind velocity. Thus, a hurricane with sustained winds of 150 mph may produce gusts exceeding 200 mph. The effect of a storm's wind is best evaluated in terms of the pressure it exerts. Pressure varies with the square of the velocity, meaning that pressures increases very rapidly with increasing wind velocity. For example, a 100 mph wind exerts a pressure of about 40 pounds per square foot on a flat surface, while a 190 mph wind would exert a force of 122 pounds per square foot. As an example, in a 100 mph wind, a 4x8 sheet of plywood would be thrown by up to 1100 pounds of force.”

The most common failure was deflection of the garage door from wind pressure until the tracks rotated and the door rollers separated from the tracks. Loss of doors resulted in envelope breach and a sudden increase in internal pressure.” This same theory will hold true for your hangar or warehouse door that is on rollers. Biomass and Renewable Energy – A Market on the Move

Biomass energy is a hot topic. With a consumption increase of over 60% from 2002 to 2013, it’s easy to see why this sector is growing at such a rapid rate. Biomass is defined as “biological material derived from living, or recently living organisms. Both plant and animal.” Even though wood is considered to be the most prolific source of biomass energy, agriculture is currently producing huge amounts of biomass residue that can be converted to energy.  In 2013, half of all the renewable energy consumed worldwide came from biomass, with the U.S. number coming in at 5%.  (That 5% is enough power to accommodate close to a half a million homes.) The U.K. and Europe are already on the fast track to successful biomass energy platforms, and it’s catching on across the globe. According to recent reports, the use of biomass for energy could change the face of agriculture and provide farmers in the U.S. alone up to $20 billion in new income.   

 

The goal is to convert crop residue, manure and other agricultural byproducts into renewable energy sources. As farmers are learning how to capture and store these resources, they are gaining new revenue streams by producing energy while reducing disposal costs. According to Ag Energy Solutions, farmers can profit from “manure, corn stalks, woody-brush, or even weeds and grasses. By utilizing more of the biological material that grows on the farm, farmers can gain more value from each acre. And because biomass is renewable, and it’s easy to replace harvested trees or crops; these energy-rich waste materials are sustainable indefinitely.”

 

In addition to large, industrial facilities, farmers are beginning to construct buildings (within the guidelines and regulations of their rural area) specifically designed to house biomass. These multifunctional structures are made to store and protect the contents from moisture while creating space to burn and/or transport the material to biomass processing plants.  And Hydroswing® is there too.
