More and more, the news about bifolds is bad. After multiple deaths in the U.S. and Europe, it won’t be long before the bifold is banned for good. Because of the way the majority of bifolds are built, there is no anti-drop mechanism or other device to prevent the door from from free-falling if there is a failure in the drive or suspension mechanism. Recently, two people were killed in the in the U.K. where a bifold dropped. This prompted an investigation by the Health & Safety Executive who determined the door hazardous. In April of 2014, a man was killed in Minnesota after being wrapped around an unprotected lower winding shaft (See the article here: http://cbsloc.al/1kw0wyr.) As long ago as 2002, according to OSHA and the US Department of Labor a death occurred because of a bifold door. “Apparently because the saddle clamps had been installed improperly. One cable, immediately adjacent to the loosened cable was missing entirely, and the door began moving downward on the right side. The tilting caused the door roller to come out of its track. It’s evident that several bifold manufacturers continue to operate without even the slightest compliance or self-governance.

Our “Mounting Protocols” demonstrate to all door owners the intricate details of how the door can be hung. Customization is one of our most important selling points so it’s critical that our customers know our “attach angle” can be made to mount our door to metal girders, concrete, block or wood buildings. Then the door will be bolted or welded in place per the protocols. (We don’t supply the headers or door pillars, but we do survey large doors and will engineer flanges to brace the existing door pillars and the Hydroswing® door jamb.)

 

Also key for most Hydroswing® door owners is “how” the door will be mounted. Our protocols detail three ways: Inside or Flush Mounting (where the door inside the building header and jamb making it flush with the face of the building), Outside Mounting (which is common in existing buildings and the door will fit against the face of the building) and Rear Mounting (this would connect the door to the rear of your building).

Bi-Fold Declared Dangerous - The Only Replacement Part for a Bi-fold is a Hydroswing

The bi-fold door is making headlines across Europe… and as usual, it’s bad news. Following a double fatality, the Express Hi Fold Door and Schweiss Hi Folding Doors UK Limited are declared HAZARDOUS by the Health and Safety Executive in Britain!

 

 The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently sent a country-wide letter “to all known users of powered overhead, bi-folding sectional doors manufactured, supplied or installed by Express Hi Fold Doors Limited or Schweiss Folding Doors UK Limited” stating these doors “currently do not have an anti-drop mechanism or other device to prevent the free fall of the door in the event of a drive of suspension failure.”  (An anti-drop mechanism is required by the European Safety Directive and European Standards.)

 

 There is no doubt the BI-FOLD IS A DANGEROUS DOOR! The HSE continues that “Without an anti-drop mechanism or other device, any failure of the drive or suspension system will result in the door free falling. This is clearly very hazardous…”  Further, the HSE recommends “As there is NO anti-drop mechanism or device available, we are writing to all known users to encourage you to TAKE THE DOOR OUT OF SERVICE….. UNTIL IT CAN BE REPLACED.”  The HSE will be enforcing action against those who do not take steps to replace the door.
