Everything you need to know about Hydraulic Doors for Aviation, Agriculture, Industrial & Architectural use

It’s Simple… Replace your Bifold Door. It’s Dangerous.

More and more, the news about bifolds is bad. After multiple deaths in the U.S. and Europe, it won’t be long before the bifold is banned for good. Because of the way the majority of bifolds are built, there is no anti-drop mechanism or other device to prevent the door from from free-falling if there is a failure in the drive or suspension mechanism. Clearly, this is a hazard and has proven fatal in some door accidents.

Recently, two people were killed in the in the U.K. where a bifold dropped. This prompted an investigation by the Health & Safety Executive who determined the door hazardous. In April of 2014, a man was killed in Minnesota after being wrapped around an unprotected lower winding shaft (See the article here: http://cbsloc.al/1kw0wyr.) As long ago as 2002, according to OSHA and the US Department of Labor a death occurred because of a bifold door. “Apparently because the saddle clamps had been installed improperly. One cable, immediately adjacent to the loosened cable was missing entirely, and the door began moving downward on the right side. The tilting caused the door roller to come out of its track. The lower portion of the door then struck an Employee.” (See the report here: http://1.usa.gov/1DvHhiT.) It’s evident that several bifold manufacturers continue to operate without even the slightest compliance or self-governance.

Technology has moved on from wires, cables, pulleys and straps. The world is becoming simpler and safer. Hydraulic doors will soon be the only logical choice for not only aviation, but for agriculture, architecture and mining sectors as well. From a safety perspective, by its very nature, the bifold door is outdated and dangerous.

The Hydroswing® Hydraulic Door is a single panel hydraulic door solution that replaces ALL bifold doors. We have all safety standards in place and our doors are manufactured at ISO 9001 certified plants and to AWS D1.1 standards.   Our zero drop two-way Hydrolok system assures the door will never fall should there ever be a loss of power. No cables. No pulleys. No straps. NO DANGER. We proudly boast over 7,000 Hydroswing® in service and a growing number of bi-fold replacements are coming in on a regular basis. We can retrofit any building or any opening.

In addition to safety, replacing a bifold is also a smart value proposition. In many instances the useful service life of a door is defined by the economic viability of replacing a dangerous, inefficient bifold. Installing a new Hydroswing hydraulic door system transforms your structure and extends the life of your building. By removing the bifold door and replacing it with the simple, pre-hung single panel Hydroswing® door system, a structure is revitalized at a fraction of the cost of a new build. With no impact to the existing building, easy installation (usually only one day), very low maintenance costs, increased overhead space and 90% fewer moving parts than the bifold, Hydroswing is quickly becoming the number one replacement door in the world.

Hydroswing – Designed by Farmers for Farmers

2. October 2015 08:15 by Hydroswing in Farm Doors

Hydroswing® was born in agriculture. We understand the unique needs of the farmers, and we understand the construction of a multitude of buildings and structures used in this sector. Over the past century, agriculture has been strongly influenced by enhanced mechanization, but even more so by how humans operate those machines. Though the fundamentals of agricultural machinery are basically the same, the technology, size, scope and capabilities have evolved dramatically. Keeping pace with the changes is how farmers “house” their equipment.  Over the last decade the single panel hydraulic agricultural door has become the “door of choice” for farmers across the country. Bifolds are unsafe, and roller doors are outdated. The superior technology, safety and sophistication of the Hydroswing hydraulic door system is revolutionizing the way farmers close their shops, sheds, barns and buildings.

Whether its post and frame, metal, Quonset, or any other type of structure, a single panel Hydroswing® hydraulic door system provides a maximum opening dimension, very little impact on the building, maximum strength, almost 100% “sealability,” very low in service life costs, reliability, massively reduced number moving parts and greater safety. The agriculture industry revolves heavily around hydraulics, so it’s easy to see why the Hydroswing® has become the premier door for farmers across the country and around the world.

The post frame build can vary tremendously depending on the size and scope of the end structure. Hydroswing® can fit and/or retro fit almost any pole barn or post frame building with doors as large as 40' tall to 150' wide. Our system creates reduced building height/cost WITHOUT reduced door opening dimension, and a very small part count in the structural mechanism of the door (no pulleys of any kind). Today’s farmer is looking for simplicity and quality. The Hydroswing® offers an integral pre-hung frame that has little dependence on the building, which allows us to easily adapt a door to any structure. From an aesthetic perspective, the ability to clad the door with the same thermal properties as the building walls, keeps the visual clean and modern.

Pre-engineered metal buildings (PEB’s) have also been prominent in agricultural settings. The structures originally became popular during World War II for barracks and maintenance facilities. After the war, the industry continued to blossom and with the power of computer aided design (CAD), today’s metal buildings can be applied to almost any non-residential use. The Hydroswing® fits easily into new construction on metal buildings or is the ideal choice for replacing an outdated or beyond economic repair existing door such as a bifold, slider or top hung.

The concept behind Hydroswing’s strong, single-panel, hydraulic design was born and bred by the demand for a more efficient door from the farmers and ranchers in the rural area. Hydroswing® has quickly become the door of choice for savvy Ag industry professionals. Although the Hydroswing phenomenon now reaches across a variety of industries, the agricultural customer remains the backbone of the business.  Hydroswing® doors are engineered specifically to provide a cost-effective solution to meet the demands of the agricultural industry. Hydroswing® delivers strength, efficiency and reliability, utilizing the same hydraulic technology that you use on your heavy equipment every day to get the job done. Why would you trust anything less for your doors?

Top 10 Reasons to Replace your Old Hangar Door with a New Hydroswing Hydraulic Door System

22. July 2015 21:00 by Hydroswing in Aviation , Hangar Doors

At Hydroswing®, we know aviation. We understand aircraft, and we understand hangars. We take pride in meeting the needs of aircraft owners and facilities worldwide. Times are changing and the days of the bifold are almost over. By replacing aging, unserviceable and dangerous hangar doors, Hydroswing® brings the best to the marketplace. So why do you need a Hydroswing Hydraulic Door system on your hangar?

10.) Broken (and dangerous) bifolds, torn fabric sliders, and inefficient rollers and stackers can cost more than they’re worth to repair.

9.) Chains, pulleys, straps and too many parts can invariably lead to a break down and possibly an accident where someone in your hangar may be injured or even killed. Our zero drop two-way Hydrolok system also assures the hangar door will never fall should there ever be a loss of power. No cables. No pulleys. No Straps.

8.) Hydroswing® door systems have 90% fewer moving parts than bifold doors.

7.) There is minimal load and reaction levels to existing hangar structures because Hydrowswing® is pre hung in its own frame. This allows for a simple removal of the old hangar door and in many cases, no additional structural work.

6.) Our customers quickly see the benefits of “going big,” maximizes the height to the eaves, and maximizes the size of the hangar to the largest width of the building frame or section.

5.) Cost effective, safe, and accommodating in sizes up to 150’(45.0 m) wide  X  40’(12.0 m) high, our Hydraulic Hangar Door system is being retrofitted in commercial aviation facilities, private airplane and helicopter hangars alike.

Bi-Fold Declared Dangerous - The Only Replacement Part for a Bi-fold is a Hydroswing

The bi-fold door is making headlines across Europe… and as usual, it’s bad news. Following a double fatality, the Express Hi Fold Door and Schweiss Hi Folding Doors UK Limited are declared HAZARDOUS by the Health and Safety Executive in Britain!

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently sent a country-wide letter “to all known users of powered overhead, bi-folding sectional doors manufactured, supplied or installed by Express Hi Fold Doors Limited or Schweiss Folding Doors UK Limited” stating these doors “currently do not have an anti-drop mechanism or other device to prevent the free fall of the door in the event of a drive of suspension failure.”  (An anti-drop mechanism is required by the European Safety Directive and European Standards.)

There is no doubt the BI-FOLD IS A DANGEROUS DOOR! The HSE continues that “Without an anti-drop mechanism or other device, any failure of the drive or suspension system will result in the door free falling. This is clearly very hazardous…”  Further, the HSE recommends “As there is NO anti-drop mechanism or device available, we are writing to all known users to encourage you to TAKE THE DOOR OUT OF SERVICE….. UNTIL IT CAN BE REPLACED.”  The HSE will be enforcing action against those who do not take steps to replace the door.

The Hydroswing® Hydraulic Door is a single panel hydraulic door solution that replaces ALL bi-fold doors. We have all safety standards in place and our doors are manufactured at ISO 9001 certified plants and to AWS D1.1 standards.   Our zero drop two-way Hydrolok system assures the door will never fall should there ever be a loss of power. No cables. No pulleys. No straps. NO DANGER.

The “Sustainable” Single Panel Hydraulic Door System

Sustainable means “pertaining to a system that maintains its own viability by using techniques that allow for continual reuse.” By replacing bifold or roller shutter doors with a Hydroswing® single panel agricultural door on your equipment and/or process buildings, you will probably never have to replace the door again. Hydroswing® is a sustainable solution to all your door needs.

The simplicity of a single panel hydraulic door compared to bifold and roller shutter doors changes face of agricultural buildings. With a Hydroswing®, (complete in its own frame, pre hung, ready to go “pillar to pillar” and right to the header), the wider you go, the better value it becomes. Safe and easy-to-use, the Hydroswing® provides almost zero in life service costs and therefore a guaranteed return on your investment.

When farmers, ranchers and biomass producers consider the potential for door replacement in their older buildings, more and more they are turning to the single panel hydraulic door solution. With internal personnel doors, wind loadings to cope with forces of 200 MPH and strength to keep valuable machinery locked in and secure, the Hydroswing® offers the most attractive and cost effective source in the marketplace today. (Financing made easier than ever through our new equipment leasing program. ) For tractor security, plant and machinery security, Hydroswing® is the only choice for farm, biomass fuel, industrial and grain storage building doors.

The difference is clear to see in the photo above, where one of three buildings has had two roller shutter doors replaced by one efficient, single panel hydraulic door. This addition adds door size, value, and in some instances, may allow you to use old buildings in ways previously not thought possible without constructing a new building. Concentrating on what you do with your building or shed is more important to your bottom line than replacing a door every two or three years.

The Hydroswing® will not pop out of its rails, rust away, flap in the wind, or allow pigeons or other birds in via the roller. With 70% less moving parts than a bifold, the Hydroswing® seals all the way round its own frame, and if required for food regulations, can be made 100% rodent proof.

Add value, size and efficiency by replacing your warn out or dangerous bifold or roller shutter doors to your biomass fuel store, grain store or agricultural buildings with a Hydroswing®. Sustain your door for years to come. Buy or lease a Hydroswing today.

It's Time for a Hydraulic Door

Retrofit is defined as a “modification to equipment that is already in service using parts developed or made after the time of the original manufacturer.” When it comes to doors (or walls), it’s easy to retrofit almost any opening with a Hydroswing® single panel hydraulic door. Whether you’re in aviation or agriculture, you’ve seen bad doors. Broken (and dangerous) bi-folds, torn fabric sliders, self-built disasters, and inefficient rollers and stackers can cost more than they’re worth to repair. Chains, pulleys, straps and too many parts can invariably lead to a break down and possibly an accident where someone may be injured or even killed. So isn’t it time for a change?

The original Hydroswing® hydraulic door is the ideal replacement for any kind of door on any kind of structure. Because our pre hung design, we can retrofit both large small building doors with little or no impact to the existing building. These minimal load and reaction levels to existing structures allow a simple removal of old door and, in most instances, no additional structural work. Customers are seeing the benefits of “going big” and increasing height and width to maximum clearance.

Cost effective, safe, and accommodating in sizes up to 150’(45.0 m) wide  X 40’(12.0 m) high, our hydraulic door is being retrofitted in everything from commercial aviation facilities and private airplane and helicopter hangars to barns, agricultural centers, sheds and machine shops. The Hydroswing® is operated by two dual-acting hydraulic rams powered by a single or three-phase motor and pump. This in itself provides an extra layer of safety because the Hydrowswing® is impossible to operate without access to the control unit, making it far more secure than other types of doors. Simplicity, strength, ease of use and reduction in moving parts, plus use of cladding (which makes the door match the thermal characteristics of the building) are among the top reasons customers are making the switch to Hydroswing®. The sophistication of single panel hydraulic doors is now part of everyday door use for facilities large and small across the U.S. and around the world.

Replacing old facility doors with the low maintenance seal-ability and strength of a Hydroswing® is a smart, safe move. With almost zero in life service costs (creating a fast and high return on investment) the Hydroswing® is ready to go “pillar to pillar” and right to the header. The wider you go with a Hydroswing®, the better value it becomes. Isn’t it time to step into the future and retrofit your outdated door?

The Bifold Hangar Door… Inferior by design

Technology has moved on from wires, cables, pulleys and straps. The world is becoming simpler and safer. Hydraulic doors will soon be the only logical choice for not only aviation, but for agriculture, architecture and mining sectors as well. From a safety perspective, by its very nature, the bifold door is outdated and potentially dangerous.  We recently completed an installation in the U.K. that demonstrates exactly why bifolds are an endangered species.

We were called us about replacing two doors at the Brighton Airport (Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, United Kingdom). The existing bifold doors were only three years old and one (at the Real Flying Company) had fallen down completely as a result of wire cable failure, the other (at Advance Helicopters) was an accident waiting to happen. Having narrowly missed the operator on site, the owner wanted to quickly dispose of a potentially dangerous situation and start new with a stronger, simpler, safer hydraulic Hydroswing® door solution. The operationally unsound bifolds were products of Express Hi Fold Ltd. (a known knock off of an American product by a similar name) and rely on wire cables connected to a chain driven winding axle drum.  With such a high number of moving parts, the risk of failure increases exponentially.

Hydroswing® was an easy choice for Apollo. Our hydraulic Hydroswing® door is a single panel, has greater strength through design and steel size, 70% less moving parts than the substandard bifold, and is now manufactured in several ISO 9001 facilities around the world, including Great Britain. The door dimensions at Shoreham 60’(18.28m) x 17’(5.18m) and 55’(16.76m) x 17’(5.18m) respectively, were quickly retrofitted with Hydroswing® which in turn immediately provided an additional three feet of tail clearance. Our zero drop two-way Hydrolok™ system also assures the door will never fall should there ever be a loss of hydraulic power.

The bifolds that were torn out have no frame so the retro fit was simple. (It usually only takes two days to fit any opening.) The Hydroswing® is built to fit easily pre hung in its own frame directly into the rough opening and welded straight to the header and uprights of the building. The vastly superior Hydroswing® also provides peace of mind when it’s open, closed or moving: No wires. No straps. No chains with axles or cogs. Most bifolds require supplementary contraptions to hold them in place while closed. Not the Hydroswing® - with almost 100% seal-ability, the door remains tight. These two Hydroswing® doors at Shoreham also incorporate our patented Bow Truss Technology, providing leading edge strength and aesthetics worthy of an architectural install. This special truss also gives “at a glance” certainty of the origin and integrity of this latest generation Hydroswing® hangar door system.

The current trend shows more and more aviation facilities stepping away from the old and now outdated bifolds in favor of the safety, simplicity and effectiveness of Hydroswing®. (Note: A number of the well known Bifold manufacturers are trying to copy and emulate the Hydroswing® design. Keep in mind if it’s not from Hydroswing®… it’s not a Hydroswing®.) We proudly boast over 7,000 Hydroswing® in service and a growing number of bifold replacements and retrofit orders are coming in on a regular basis. Hydroswing® continues to change the general aviation hangar door sector for good. The Hydroswing® hangar door systems are the right choice:

  • 70% less moving parts
  • 100% improved seal-ability
  • Almost Zero Maintenance
  • Zero Drop Safety with Hydrolok™
  • 1m (3’.0) recovered clear height
  • 100% better looking
  • Adds value to the building
  • 90 MPH wind rating standard
  • Full drawing pack per door
  • Patented Bow Truss Technology
  • 2 day retro fit on most buildings

Bye, Bye Bi-fold… Hello Hydraulic Door

3. December 2013 17:18 by Hydroswing in General, Hangar Doors

We live in a culture of technology. Things change in the blink of an eye. Everything becomes more efficient, either sooner or later. Cassettes became CDs, VHS videos became DVDs, so it only makes sense that hangar doors, agriculture doors and architectural doors should follow suit… so in a world of “what’s the best way to build,” it won’t be long before bi-fold doors will take a backseat to hydraulic doors.  In the long run, simpler is always better, and when it comes to doors, less is more.

The bi-fold door filled a need when it was first introduced to the market. It was the only game in town and seemed the logical choice for anyone looking for a door for their facility or hangar. There weren’t other options available so everyone got acclimated to using them. Well, times have changed and technology has improved, and now the bi-fold doesn’t seem to make much sense.  It’s time to say “Bye Bye to the Bi-fold!”  And here’s why:

Top 5 Disadvantages of Bi-fold Doors:
1. Lots of moving parts, which means a lot of maintenance.

2. The pulleys and drive chains are exposed to the stress of constant movement and run the risk of slipping out or breaking down.

3. The awkward fold, with its pulleys and straps, are cumbersome and quickly becoming a thing of the past.

4. One of the main concerns for both pilots and farmers is being able to utilize a maximum amount of overhead space in their hangar or barn. Bi-fold doors will require at least 24” of clearance just to sit in the rough opening, thereby increasing the height of any new builds or add-ons, usually all the around the hangar height.

5. They are limited in their capacity to carry cladding or finishes with little overall structural integrity.

Enter hydraulic doors… the stronger, safer, one-piece system that boasts 70% less moving parts. And, now that companies like Hydroswing® Hydraulic Doors are matching the bi-fold pricing dollar for dollar on hydraulic hangar doors, agricultural doors and architectural doors, why would you want to deal with tracks, casters and pulleys? Say hello to hydraulic doors! And here’s why:

Top 5 Advantages of Hydraulic Doors:
1. Deliver max opening width and height while reducing your overall build costs without

2. 70% less moving parts than a bi-fold door and 50% less moving parts than sectional, bottom rolling, roller, top hung, fabric or standard sectional overhead.

3. When considering servicing and cost of ownership, Hydroswing® Hydraulic Door is the best value door product on the market with the lowest in life service cost of any large door competitor

4. When building new, hydraulic doors require less building height.

5. Price. Price. Price. Dollar for dollar, the Hydroswing® Hydraulic Door is just as cost effective as a bi-fold.

So step into the future and say “bye bye to bi-fold” and hello to hydraulic. Replace your old bi-fold and upgrade to the superior technology of a Hydroswing® Hydraulic Door. It won’t be long before progress is no longer a choice, but a necessity.
